The Central West End (just East of Forest Park) is very nice, lots of good restaurants! You didn't mention where you are staying or your interests but food is always a choice for everyone! Chuck Berry has a bar in 'the loop' (Blueberry Hill), speaking of the 'Hill' that is the Italian section (south side) and has many good restaurants. Check out the St Louis Art Museum (SLAM) which houses a Wolfgang's Restaurant (and a very nice art collection) located in Forest Park. The Missouri Botanical Garden (South Side) is a very interesting and relaxing way to spend an afternoon. As with all cities you can go from Good to Bad really quickly, but avoid East St Louis (across the river), the near North side and North of the Loop (this section goes from Great to worse than Bad within a block so be careful). See as much of St Louis as you can, it is a beautiful city! Contact me if you need specifics. Kevin O

Stay in Clayton or the Central West End. These are the two more open, enlightened, young professional areas of town, where you will find more sophisticated and well-educated people, good restaurants, retail, health clubs, etc.
Most other areas of St. Louis are VERY unfriendly to outsiders... I had to live there for two years on a business relocation, and I have never seen a more hostile, closed-minded community in my life. I guess it is the bad economy and unemployment there... they just hate people coming in from out of town to work, especially since almost anyone from another part of the country has better job skills and a stronger work ethic. They are also extremely racist, so if you have any kind of ethnic background, be super careful where you go around there.

Many parts of South St Louis are just fine. South County, Afton, Crestwood, all those communities are safe. I don't know anything about North County or North City, because I've never lived there. Public transportation isn't very convenient, so I hope you have a car.
Where are you staying, or are you trying to pick a place? Where do you need to be for your work?

Stay away from East St.Louis, and South St.Louis. The metrolink transit system is pretty much safe, and well policed. Remember that St.Louis is IN St.Louis county. I was born and raised there and can tell you that everyplace in St.Louis County is packed so close together that they actually merge into one huge city. If you go to the Illinois side of the river,East St.Louis and Cahokia are NOT safe places. Dupo is OK,And Columbia Ill is the safest and wealthiest place you will find. If you are looking for a place to stay I would recomend Columbia Ill,because it is close to the city, safe, friendly, and my home town lol. Anywhere you go keep the car doors locked, and just use common sense when dealing with people and you will be fine. It;'s not a bad place ,but everyplace has it's nutz. Good luck

The others have given you good answers. However, I noticed that someone mentioned riding on the metro link is safe and the police provide good security. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Do not ride the metro link if you do not have to. It is only moderately safe in the morning when people are riding it to go to work and the evenings when people are riding from work to home.
The stations and the actually trains are full of creeps and bums that beg you for money. In addition they stop in the terrible neighorhoods.
I don't know if this will help you, but I wanted to let you know just in case you were thinking about riding the metro link. Also, just to let you know I use to work at metro link's headquarters.

central west end; west county; anywhere west of the city--all good places
east stl, south & parts of north are not safe.
fun places include downtown landing, westport (270 & 70), central west end, wineries out west, restaurants on the hill, soulard market in the daytime. the small towns to the west down hwy 44 (washington, hermann) are nice places for a day trip. excellent wineries and restaurants all over.
