Obviously varies from person to person, but i think a good guide is from age 18 to pensioner, 6-8 hours uninterrupted, and for everyone else, 8-10 hours uninterrupted.

This quotient varies from person to person, I would say as a guideline, 7-8 hours, for an adult who is working.

During sleep, the body carries out the processes of repair. For example, the heartbeat reduces, enabling that particular muscle to relax. The digestive system releases the proteins that are needed for cellular growth and repair. The brain has a chance to deal with its stored sensory input, and eliminate the dross.

In short, sleep is when our inner self sorts itself out, so that our outer self can function effectively.

You will, no doubt, hear of famous people who have done with less sleep. Margaret Thatcher, one time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Britain and bits of Northern Ireland, was reputed to do without the sleep she needed, as a consequence, we have the highest energy bills ever although we sit on the world's best source of reasonably clean energy, which we cannot use owing to a Thatcherian fit of pique. (Destroy the miners Union, so destroy the mines, and bugger the consequences).

So do not do without sleep. Our greatest recent person who denied herself sleep, destroyed a culture that was over 100 years old and has left the North, parts of Scotland, most of South Wales and even bits of Kent, bereft of meaningful work and thus prey to those so-called entrepreneurs who reduce skills to a minimum and latch on to the thick as a source if cheap, if ineffectual, labour.

They say it's 8 hours for the majority of people. Just enough for a person to reach R.E.M. (rapid eye movement) which is necessary for you're brain to process the 60,000 or so images and countless information the human brain takes in every day. Me personally i like about 6 hours. Coz the way i look at it is, if u sleep 8 hours a day thats 1/4 of you're life wasted sleeping. Life is too precious to waste that time on sleeping!

a regular adult person needs between 7-8 hours of sleep every night. That's how much you need to stay healthy. Not enough sleep is harmfull but so is too much sleep. Some people claim they get by with only 5 hours of sleep and some need 10 hours. you'll see that most of these people develop heart problems because of it.

I can get by on about 5 hours a night for ages - but I get quite hyper!! I always have to do something.

The last week I have been on holiday and find going to bed at about 1 or 2 is fine, but although I wake at about 7 still, I laze in bed lots, getting up at about 10.00 or so. its been bloody great - in fact so great i am dreading going back to work on Wednesday!!

Everyone is different. To much sleep often makes you feel even more tired doesnt it?

it depends on the type of person you are. They say the average for an adult is usually 8 hours sleep a night.
But who has time to sleep that much. There is just not enough hours in the day!!!

It varies, most nights I sleep maybe 7 hours but then every week or so I will have a night where I sleep for nine or more hours. It varies a lot from person to person dependant on circumstances, health, medications, metabolism and many different variables.

Eight hours seems like a cliché, but actually it is sufficient for you to lower your blood pressure and for your brain to reach deep, restorative sleep just before you wake. Also it is essential for you to have sufficient R.E.M sleep also.

I had on average, 5 hours sleep for about 8 years, until I changed my job recently, I thought I was ok with this and used to it, but I am of the opinion now it did me physical harm.

It has been suggested that less is ok, but very recent research states as above. Ps, you naturally sleep less as you get older.
