If not were they ones available through prescription?

Just wondering, because in the movie he says that they're prescribed and the only illegal part was taking them over the border...

Many performers were taking them at one time or another, as well as many other people who would complain of tiredness. When the effects became known, a closer watch on Amphetamines was implemented. Johnny Cash couldn't get the drugs that he was used to anymore. Even having a handful of Doctors. He got caught without any and bought them from a street dealer.

Yes they were prescription drugs... not sure if they were to him exactly though.

They were legally presribed at first but he got so addicted he was buying them in Mexico!
