Many times it is the sense of belonging and being a part of a 'family' group. Many members of gangs lack strong or consistent family ties due to many circumstances and a gang affords them an avenue to have someone to look up to, to emulate, and to mentor. It validates their existence and the need to feel wanted, needed, and important.

teenagers are more likely to join gangs when they have an underbounded family style. Their family members are detached...nobody communicates feelings or emotions. They turn to gangs because they promise "brotherhood" and belonging--something they don't receive at home. Now they have a connection with the gang, something that feels good to them regardless of the ramifications of the gangster lifestyle.

It makes some people feel superior, because they feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves. If you research this, you will find that many gang members come from backgrounds where they may not have gotten that much attention from their families and loved ones. Being a part of a gang with other members from a similar background will give one a sense of belonging, and peace of mind that they are not alone in what their life has been like up to that point.

TV and movies... if society didn't glorify it like it was ok, then you wouldn't see so many copy cats tryin to be hard like the characters they see on TV. That's the bottom line. Their parents can tell they everything from how bad the lifestyle is from punishing the... but in the end... kids/people too, would conform to that mentality. Sad... so sad.

They don't have fathers or grandfathers, definite male role models. The men they know in their families are often abusive, incestuous, bullies.
So they seek the gangsta life to find structure that they lack in their own familes and communities.

Most likely rap music (for the easily influenced), the feeling you get from being in a 'family' (for the dependent), or a self-induced addiction to adrenaline or "The Thrill" (for anybody).
