I like an in-depth discussion about issues that make people think.
Whether the issues are controversial because of very different emotional attachments, or simply complex with many facets, both are equally valued. And what makes such discussions most beneficial, is having many different perspectives and viewpoints. The more different ideas, the better.
Provided, of course, that everyone involved is respectful of the differences, and able to distinguish between the speaker and the idea being discussed.

I can easily handle myself in a controversial discussion. I answer with facts, and decline to answer when I either don't have them or if I'm not sure of them. Too many people tend to talk and not know what they are talking about; they use the emotions, not the intellect.
I prefer an INTELLEGENT discussion, devoid of insults, half-truths, misconceptions, stereotypes, hasty assumptions, out-right lies and jumping to conclusions. I debate this way, with all of the courtesies mentioned here. I refuse to debate with someone who will not reciprocate and show me the same courtesy and respect.
PS: See cantcu's statement, above. I rest my case.

Definately.
I will often take the 'less than popular' opinion in a discussion, simply to have an interesting discussion.

I like to discuss politics and religion. I would like to do so with some calm, reasoned and intelligent people. I can do without the Yahoo! Answers abusers who post their bizarre rants in the form of a question.

Discussion yes! Name calling and fictitious arguments no! (Bush does not belong in this category and deserves everything said about him for the death and destruction he has caused!)
Why, because one side will never convince the other side!
Though my GPA is over twice that of Bush's, I actually learn a lot! Listening to neocons have led me to a lot of good material, and things I never knew before! For that I thank you!

A discussion, yes, as long as the people involved don't resort to name-calling and scare tactics.

Oh yeah. Bring 'em on. As long as the debate can stay civil, it's great!

Yes, but I agree with KERMIT M. Only if it's civil, and that's not too often here.
