Don't get behind--getting caught up in college is twice as hard as it was in high school. When the semester begins, it's going to seem like you have all kinds of time in the world to get things done, but the next thing you know there will only be 3 weeks left til finals. You won't believe how fast the time went and wish you had more. Go to class and talk to your prof after class, you'll become a face to him/her rather than a name, and you'll often get the benefit of the doubt when grading time comes. If you get stuck, go to the tutoring center before it becomes a crisis. Do a little work on each class every day, and it won't be so overwhelming. Other than that---party!!

A couple of things:
1. Make sure that you and your roommate are a good fit. That's one biggie because so much of your college experience is going to hinge on this. It's hard to escape a bad situation. So I would get to know the roomie, find out expectations of each other for the first year - like, partying, girlfriends/ boyfriends, studying.

2. Set yourself up for success. You don't need all the comforts of home, but make sure that you have what you will need. You should get a small dorm size frig, access to a microwave, get yourself a plug in coffeepot (for those late night study sessions), and a good alarm clock.

You're at school for education but much of college is about learning to think - at least in the undergrad level.

And finally, pace yourself. Don't wait until the last minute for things so that you end up pulling all nighters. Those parties can really wait. Many freshman don't make it past their freshman year. Don't become one of the statistics. Keep your eyes focused ahead on the goal and don't get distracted by the ones that don't do the same. You have a lifetime ahead of you to play, but college comes around once. Don't waste it.

Join clubs, it's a good way to make friends with similar interests. Take advantage of all the extras that the college offers like gym access, discounted computer software, transportation services, etc. Also, once you decide on a major, make friends with the professors in your department. They can be your best resources for career advising in the future. Don't get behind in your studies because you will severely regret it later. Also, call your family a lot... they will miss you... and sometimes parents are more willing to contribute funds when they know what you're up to.

I had the best time of my young life in undergrad.. I went into it not expecting anything. It worked great!

I graduated with a husband, time spent in both Ecuador & Mexico, more than a couple wild flings... etc.

Good times!

don't party or drink too much! focus on your studies but have a balance of both! be very straightforward with your dorm-mate! If something bothers you, let them know right away! If you let it linger, it would not only be awkward but a relationship could be damaged!

Don't get behind on your homework! It is so hard to catch up. Don't get too caught up in all the partying, you will pay a price if you do. Good Luck!
