That if the average IQ is 100 points, and that researchers have said that mild mental retardation starts at 75 IQ points, and that "normal" people have trouble relating to the world of the mentally challenged and vice versa, well since there's only 25 IQ points difference, could it be ALSO inferred that someone with an IQ of 125 or HIGHER, would have trouble relating to someone of "normal" IQ, since it would also be a 25 point (or more) IQ difference?

abstinemous..sorry, but I don't believe that, because my mother only went to 6th grade and her IQ is average, however mine is 138.

Think of it this way. If you take 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. The mid-range is 4, so if the study was done on 101 people standing in line, 50% tile would be chosen as an average from the range of whom where studied. This is just a research...no way to get 100% accuracy unless the entire world's population was tested.

IQ only measures how good you are at taking tests. The IQ ranking is not linear. The IQ changes with the times and time. You may be 138 now, but in ten years it may rate 125 because the average test covers more ground..(Higher math is taught, more science, more history, more sophisticated books, etc.) Also age dulls the mind.

Bohemianboi...the reasoning is very basic...but you are close to correct. Many high IQ types NEVER adapt to the world around them. They have difficulty understanding that people of average IQ are not "stupid".
Many times when a question is posed they are frustrated that an answer that is obvious to them escapes the people of "normal" intelligence. Under certain conditions that very thing can lead to a psychotic break for those of very high IQ. They have trouble comprehending the idea that they are exceptional and the great majority of people on earth cannot or do not measure up to that same standard.

I think it can be true, because your minds are at different levels. The higher the IQ the bigger the difference.
Average IQ can relate to lower IQ alot easier because the gap isn't that large, and their minds don't think the way higher IQ's do
Higher IQs seem to have trouble dealing with everyday things.

I really dont think so. My "IQ" has tested to be around 135-140. And I get along well with people of every age, gender, and intelligence level. There is so much more to our relationships than just what a standardized test says our intelligence level is. Some people, however, may use their level of "intelligence" as a wall to the outside world. When truly smart people are skilled in many areas, not just book-smarts. Being a friend is about compassion and understanding. You dont have to be a genius to see into someones heart. Someone who is "book smart" AND compassionate to all people is a TRULY intelligent person. Someon who uses their intelligence as a barrier is an idiot.

Mental retardation actually is considered 70 or less. Also "normal" is a subjective term which is open to personal interpretation. Despite IQ rating, which in themselves are again highly subjective due to a number of factors, I think the ability to relate to others is based more in interpersonal style than IQ ratings.

An interesting point. I think it may be a bit like age difference, as for example most 34 year olds would find it hard to relate to a 18 year old and vice versa. But like age differences, in wisdom too there would be exceptions, such as Chris Evans and Billie Piper for example.
That said, though I could develop this wee note into a far more substantiated and interesting point, my mind was last seen wandering towards Billie Piper.

Absolutely. People with High IQ seam to leave in a different world.
That's why they get all the nicknames like "geek" or "nerd". Exactly in the same way people with low IQ get nicknames like "retard" and "dumb ***".
They just perceive the world in a different way from average people and thus have different values.

Great point! I think IQ tests aren't very accurate. I agree more with the multiple intelligence theory! If you like reading ever read the book Flowers for Algernon. It deals with the whole situation with this guy who is "mentally retarded" then later he gets an expirement done and becomes a genius. It's really cool!

There is trouble, but the person with higher IQ has to be smart enough to deal with other people.
