Earlier today I saw on c-span a conference about Hurricaine Katrina recovery and the failure of fema and homeland security. One of the points being discussed was how the gov. went about feeding the people who were living in shelters. One of the speakers was the city council president, he and the author of a book about the handleing of the recovery said that during discussions with fema it was mentioned that most of the chefs of New Orleans had agreed that they would take on the responsibility to feed the people and keep the cost down, everything was in place except FEMA who opted to have food catered by a company that was based in a central European country that eludes me at the moment, but it cast taxpayers $14 for a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich, while the chefs of New Orleans could have fed an entire family for a day for less.

My question is, Does this indicate that our government is a failure when it comes to looking out for the best interest of the people?

Considering things like this happen more than not. Or is $14 a reasonable amount of money for the government to spend on a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich?

Our government and/or any entity there in are idiots. Did the sandwich really cost $14 or did someone line their pockets with $13 of it. I think so. Thats why the rich get richer and the poor poorer. I hope a hurricane takes out one of their mansions some day-A

That's why the federal government (under any administration) shouldn't be involved in 'fixing' disasters.

However, I could not find references to your 'European' country or $14 cost per sandwich.

I did see references to Ohio and Florida. But that is to be expected as quite a bit of staples in LA were washed away.

I also saw that the decisions were made by mid-level bureaucrats who are career FEMA employees. They apparently exceeded their authority. The blame (if any) goes to the bureaucrats.

Because it is not about feeding hungry people, it's about turning a buck. We have people in office who have no idea what a peanut butter sandwich should cost but they know who their friends are and where the kickbacks come from. And they sure know that in NO

That is an abuse of the government, they should be punished to the full extent of the law. Our government has failed in many ways lately, this is but one instance. We need to be watch dogs on those in power even the president, who has abused his power routinely.
