Now this is total fact. Generalissimo Santa Ana (yes the one from the Texas revolution) is generally credited with the invention of Chewing Gum. He and Thomas Adams actually reinvented it. The Mayans had it 1000 years ago.

The Americas were inhabited much latter. The Mayans had a complex Astronomy system worked out though. They are credited with independently inventing the wheel. They also brought "up" corn and squash to the North American Indians whom latter gave it to the Anglo Pilgrims.
