Delco battery's get corrosion on the terminals check and clean there first you might find a real mess when you go to turn the battery terminal bolt and it falls off in your hand common problem with those stinking battery's. If you can Vice-Grip the terminal and bolt apart slide the red and black parts up off the cable and clean with baking soda and sand paper metal part must be shiny. slide the red and black vinyl covers back on buy a couple new battery bolts after you put in a new battery. Now for the bad news! Charging into a bad connector causes the alternator to fail. No good news at all. GM remanufactured alternator costs approx $230 aftermarket reman. alternators 120 dollars and up some with warranty thank goodness your alternator is right on top always disconnect the battery before trying to unbolt the alternator.

John Paul is giving you a good place to start. Do what he recommends first. Second thing to check are the battery cables on the other end. Wherever they terminate on a Monte Carlo of that year, those connections need to be checked. I had a 97 Monte that got stuck in a minor flood for several hours that rotted out the negative ground to the chassis and caused my car to act like crazy.

A computer malfunction is possible & that should show up with an OBD reader at the repair shop. If you don't trust anybody and want an OBD reader check out Actron.

There could be something wrong with your battery or alternator.
Check to see if there's any corosion on the battery leads if there is try cleaning it with a wire brush or sprinkle some baking soda on the part were the leads are connected to the battery in then pour water on the baking soda and wait a while for the baking soda to react with the acid. Also never touch the brown colored acid!

with the car off... reset the computer by disengaging the cables to the battery and then re-engaging them.

That's a good place to start.
