There really is no way to get your 4 month old to sleep longer. You have a new born so your baby is going to sleep how ever long he/she wants to. When your baby gets older then he/she will sleep more but for now you have to put up with your baby wakeing up all the time.

Everybody has their tricks, the problem is just when you figure it out your baby will be teething and the cycle begins again.

I think the best thing you can do is remember that your baby will pick up on your "vibe". Keep relaxed even if it's 4am and its the third time you've been up. When you get frustrated, the baby senses this and things get worse. Do your best to stay calm and relaxed and you will be able to get baby to sleep faster.

Also, you may consider sleeping with your baby. You'll get a little more sleep and it's just absolutely beautiful to watch your baby sleep soundly next to you. I know those who've allowed the kids to sleep with the parents until around age 2. At around 6 months my boy started sleeping in his own room, but we still bring him into bed after 6am to sleep in with us.

Well you don't say how much he/she sleeps, or if there's a problem that can cause lack of sleep etc. so the answer is - Unfortunately there is no way, if he/she has had enough to eat and is perfectly comfortable sleeping hours will be longer, but every child reacts in it's own way, all you have to do is wait a while longer.

Establish a bedtime routine. I did this with my three month old, and now he'll sleep ALL night, usually almost 8 hours! Just keep it consistent. Try to put him to bed the same time every night, do whatever you want to do, if you want to include a book and a bath, then go ahead.

I put my my baby in his bassinett at the same time every night, wrap him in his favorite blanket, and give him his favorite pacifier. After about three nights, he realized that this means he's supposed to go to sleep! So he always goes to sleep within ten minutes, it's been wonderful!

Try warming a blanket in the dryer and lay them to bed with it. Cover your baby up good and the warmth will put him/her down for a good sleep. Also, when you do get up with your baby at night, keep the lights down low or even use a flashlight. This way your baby will stay in "the zone" and not get too awake.

Feeding cereal at evening feedings is a good way to get them to sleep longer. Also, you might try a soothing ocean sound CD playing in the room. My kids love those, they help them to sleep really good. Try not to let her nap too much late in the afternoon, play with her and keep her awake longer.

Wait another two months, baby.
I know it's tough, but they have to do it on their own, so hang in there. My baggy eyes sympathize. You're ALMOST THERE!
You've gone through the whole pregnancy and childbirth thing, and what do you REALLY remember about it? This too shall pass.
Give that baby a kiss, and take a picture of that sweet little angelic face. One day (really) you will miss these days. If I didn't know this, I wouldn't be telling you. Much less be doing it again myself!
Just wait....there'll be more adventures to come after this little phase passes. ;)

try to keep the night time quiet, and even if he or she ate at 8:00pm, give them another bottle at around 10, even if they are sleep, that should keep them nice and full for the whole night.
Good Luck,
also ask your pediatrician what would be best.
i feed my daughter oatmeal and a 6 ounce bottle before she goes to sleep, and it works good! she is 5 months old, and it helps you stay sleep during the night. i also try to keep her up until about 10pm.

You cannot MAKE a baby sleep. There are things you can do to encourage the baby to be awake more during the day, and sleep longer at night, but keep in mind it is normal for babies to wake up at night. Hang in there! this WILL pass.

If your baby sleeps longer than 3 hours during the day, wake him up gently. Play with him and stimulate him, help him get used to the idea that daytime is "awake time."

If your baby takes a nap late in the evening, gradually try to encourage him to nap earlier in the afternoon, and stay awake in the evening until bedtime. Don't make him overtired, but see if you can hold him off by gently playing with him.

Try to make sure he gets a full feeding before bed. Do not give in to the temptation to give him cereal at bedtime. Cereal has not been proven to help babies sleep longer at night, and it can cause problems if it is fed to babies whose digestion is not ready for it.

If your baby wakes at night, keep the lights low and keep things quiet. Don't encourage him to play. Change his diaper quickly so he will be comfortable, feed him so his hungry tummy won't keep him up, and then snuggle him right back to sleep.

Have you ever read "The NoCry Sleep Solution" book? I have not used it myself, but I have heard it contains great ideas for helping your child sleep without leaving him to cry all alone. :-(
