You're right, it's mildew, and you can kill it with a strong bleach solution. Add bleach and water in equal parts in a plastic spray bottle (make sure you wash it out before adding bleach if it's been used for something else prior), and then spray all the surfaces until they are dripping wet. Within minutes, you'll see the stains fading. Spray with a milder solution weekly to keep the mildew from coming back. However, sometimes the caulk (the rubbery stuff that is put along the edge of the tub) can become permanently discolored with mildew, and in this case, it'll have to be cut out and recaulked. This is a cheap and easy procedure.

That black stuff you are talking about is dirt and mold. It is so hard to come off and it takes a while for that to build up. Try cleaning your bathtub once a week and it won't be so bad.
What I use is Lysol disinfectant all purpose cleaner with bleach. It's a white spray bottle found in the cleaning isle of the grocery store. You will want to open a window when u use this because it does have a strong bleach smell. What I do is spray all the corners, the bottom of the tub, and the sides of the wall. I let it sit for an hour. I use a brush to scrub off any stuck matter and rinse. If it's real bad I spray again and do the same thing.
It also kills the germs that you don't want. It does work, you have to try it once at least.

i own a house cleaning business and the one and only thing i use on mildew is tilex mildew remover. it does have bleach in it so if you have kids and or dont want the smell of it, cause it is harsh, use straight up hydrogen peroxide. let it sit on the area, do not rinse, after the peroxide sits for awhile it turns to pure oxygen and is not harmful to kids or pets. Hope this helps.

Use Clorox Clean Up spray bottle and spray enough to soak it and leave it sit for a while. If that doesn't work, it might be that your caulking needs replaced. All you have to do is get a box cutter and work up enough of the caulking so that you can peel it off. Wash thoroughly and let dry for 24-48 hours. Then reapply with new caulking, which you can find in the local hardware store, or probably even at Wal-Mart.

Make a cleanser that will remove these stains by mixing half a cup baking soda with half a cup lukewarm water. Use a household brush to work the mixture into the corners and keep scrubbing!

Sometimes it takes several application of bleach to kill the mild/mildew regular liquid bleach had work the best for me. Tilex also works good. With both products you need to let them set and do not mix with any cleaner with ammonia as
an ingredient.

Straight bleach. If it's real black that means the fungus has actually eaten (and crapped out) the grout. So it won't come clean... re grout. And be cleaner in the future.
My nephew and his buddies thrashed my sister's house, down in San Diego, a few years ago and she had the same problem.
