Bed bugs are becoming very common in big cities again. You may have picked them up during a hotel stay recently, or if you share laundry facilities, you could have gotten them from someone else's laundry. You'll need heavy-duty help to get rid of them. Washing the sheets won't do it, since they live in the crevices in the mattress and these bugs are hard to kill. You'll need to fumigate, and then buy a completely sealed mattress cover (not just a topper) that is dust mite proof. Just get new pillows and put covers on these as well. But they may also be in the carpets and other textiles, so you'll have to have an insect service do the entire apartment.

Bedbugs are indeed making a comeback in big cities, and they're very hard to get rid of.
But first, are you sure that it's not fleas?? Fleas go for the lower legs too. Check for fleas by putting on white socks and sitting on the chair/sofa/etc with you feet on the floor. It it's fleas, they'll be visible on the white socks. Good luck.

Have you actually seen bugs? It could be your detergent.
If you have bird's nest nearby it could be those tiny little mites that you can't see unless they're crawling on something white. We get a few bird's nests on our front porch every year & have to buy those things for mites that people who have indoor birds buy to put in their cages. Do you have pets that sleep with you?

Try putting tape, sticky side up, around the legs of the bed and see if any get stuck on the tape at night. I saw this on tv.

Look in the creases in the sides of your mattress. If you see any call the health department. They are hard to get rid of . Even if you get rid of yours they will come back from other apts.
