I had that problem so all I did was put a whole bottle of vinegar in it and filled it up with hot water then turned it off and let it set for a few hours then let it go through the cycles. It worked too now it smells like new. It also cleans out hard water if it is built up in it.

Run your washer empty on the largest wash capacity setting it has. Add 1 cup of white vinegar and let it agitate for at least 15 minutes. Let it run through the rinse cycles and see if it doesn't help remove the smell. If not, try it again, but with a cup of bleach.

You'll want to clean the washer well and use a toothbrush to get into those crevices around the lid, and some kind of small flat object to help you dig out any packed-in gunk. Then run your washer with hot water and bleach.
Hot water and vinegar and baking soda might do it too.
Good luck!

You could try the vinegar and bleach tricks that everyone is talking about, but it might not be the washer itself, it might be the drainage hose is clogged or has a build up in it that has a foul odor creeping up into the washer basin. Replace the hose, and flush the drainage pipe with some drain cleaner and see if that helps.

i bought a brand new washer-dryer and hadn't had it anytime before I started noticing this horrible odor, couldn't figure out what it was and it got worse and worse, it did not affect the clothes, it would almost make you gag, smelled like something
died in it, we turned it over but couldn't find anything
eventually it went away, we never did figure it out

it could be the water in your area. maybe you could run a short wash cycle with no clothes and a little bleach. that might work, or maybe a little baking soda. i have never had this problem so those are the only ideas i could come up with.

Run it without clothing a couple of time using bleach. Then a couple of times with white vinegar and then a couple of time with baking soda.. ought to do the trick.

Use something with enzymes in it. I work part - time for a janitorial supply store and the sales reps there say that it is the best for any odor.
