And I'm serious! I tend to think it is a genetic thing more than social/economic factor...thoughts? I'm talking about really small sized minds here too because I know a lot of mentally disabled people who are very brilliant in their own right...I'm talking serious dumb here. What determines that?

To a certain degree I believe personality has a lot to do with being intelligent, some people have a huge quest for knowledge. However I think almost every child is born with the ability to be bright, they actually like to learn, some children are encouraged and nurtured in every way possible while others are not, however it does not mean that these less advantaged children lack potential or the ability to learn.

Mostly luck. When you think hard about it, the distance between the dumbest person and the smartest person you ever met is not that far when you compare them with an orang-utan or a donkey. Most human beings of sound mind, given a stable childhood, a parent or parents who encourage curiousity, and a healthy diet, have the capacity to learn anything. The brain is a strange & wonderful thing.

Generally, I think it is the information we come across and how it is represented, and what we choose to take from the events of our lives.

For example, in the early times of America, slavery was rampant. Now you could take this as whites are power hungry dominators; you could take this as blacks were weak and deserved to be enslaved; or you could take this as essentially something that happened that was wrong, but doesn't mean all whites are evil or all blacks are weak. Just a bad thing that happened and something we should learn never to do again.

But if a white kid grows up around members of the KKK, he'll probably be prone to believe the blacks should have been slaves. If a black kid grows up around say members of the Black Panthers, he'll be more likely to grow up thinking whites are evil. So in this instance it is basically a good deal of what they are told and why they are told that.

And finally, it is just what we gather from various events. While the white kid that grows up KKK or the black kid that grows up with Black Panthers may be more likely to believe the foolishness, they do have their own minds and they may wind up believing the intelligent thing as well. So it is a combination of genetics, beliefs we are taught, beliefs we develop on our own.

i think its genetics too, social/ economic plays a part, but a small one

like poorer kids who've never been to school could just posses a higher intelligence quotient than suburban kids who were forced to go to school and probably slacked off a lot :)

but with mentally disabled people, i think its just the part of their brain that the rest of use thats "disabled",

they have access to other parts of their brain that we dont, and i think that why they can do things that we cant, code breakers for example in autistic kids

so whats to say we're not the "mentally disabled" ones?

just the fact that there is more of us than there is them! thats it!

I believe there are two types of smart. There is book smart, which are people who breeze through school and college. Then there are the people with common sense. These people are the working class of society or blue collar. It's hard to find people who fit both descriptions, but usually one struggles with the other.

nothing determines that. your iq is just something that tells you how fast u learn something. if u have a low iq that doesn't mean that u can't succeed in life. i think that how much work u put into something(anything, school, sports, video games...) tells u how u will do in the subject. don't waste your time playing too many video games if u want to be a dr. or something.u seem prettty smart. jsut follow not what u think is fun, but what you KNOW is right.

DNA end of discussion. Being smart or stupid has nothing to do with being uneducated or educated, which is a product of the environment on some individuals.

Your surroundings, intelligence, wit, society where you live, climate, economic background, opportunities taken, behavior, ability to improvise, adapt, whatever makes you happy in order to achieve it

But remember
There are Seven Types of Intelligence:
1. Linguistic
Children with this kind of intelligence enjoy writing, reading, telling stories or doing crossword puzzles.
2. Logical-Mathematical
Children with lots of logical intelligence are interested in patterns, categories and relationships. They are drawn to arithmetic problems, strategy games and experiments.
3. Bodily-Kinesthetic
These kids process knowledge through bodily sensations. They are often athletic, dancers or good at crafts such as sewing or woodworking.
4. Spatial
These children think in images and pictures. They may be fascinated with mazes or jigsaw puzzles, or spend free time drawing, building with Leggos or daydreaming.
5. Musical
Musical children are always singing or drumming to themselves. They are usually quite aware of sounds others may miss. These kids are often discriminating listeners.
6. Interpersonal
Children who are leaders among their peers, who are good at communicating and who seem to understand others' feelings and motives possess interpersonal intelligence.
7. Intrapersonal
These children may be shy. They are very aware of their own feelings and are self-motivated.
