when i go into display properties then click on the tab "desktop" there is a list of pictures for backgrounds i can use (just pictures of autumn or beaches) but i'm unable to click on them like it doesn't give me that option. i can see them but i can't use them.

sounds like your properties page was locked out. something power users do if they have multiple accounts and want to limit what a specific account can do. (mostly for those with kids and extremely paranoid)

get the microsoft power toy TweakUI
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

find the settings that let you tweak your desktop properties and see if you can unlock your ability to change wallpapers. ( the pictures you are trying to access)
