When I am posting the blog, there are the options 'public, diary, friends preferred list'. So I click diary so it will be viewable to only me but I sign out and type in my page address to see it and it shows up. So, obviously everyone can see it. What can I do?

"Diary" is the correct setting.
Outsiders will always see the subject of a blog, but once someone clicks on the blog link, they won't be able to read it.
