been there, done that.
While working for a large JoAnn's ETC store, it was very common for evening customers to want to visit. As I helped them, I also included other customers. I never, ever thanked them and turned away. Often, "rounding" up the comments with "that will work great with your decor, let us know if you need anything else" was sufficient closing.
It was also very easy to help more than one customer at a time. Unfortunately being helpful wasn't enough for the corporation, they almost never gave raises and let their managers be too autonomous.
Just be polite, welcoming to everyone and begin to help another customer and start talking to them. The other customer will get the hint eventually and will move on.
Understand that for many customers, they need social interaction and you may be the only person they see that day. Sad but true....

Politely tell them thank you for their business and to come in again; Next ...
You should not be the only person to provide customer service if this happens freuquently. I can't stand stores that have one service clerk and the line-up for help is a mile long.

Maybe you could say in a polite manner," Go ahead and continue with your story-I'm listening, but I've got these others waiting that I need to wait on before they get disgruntled with our service here."
It's a 50/50 shot that they'll be offended, but you've work to do and they'll think of that in retrospect after they've stormed out.Best to have one aggravating customer upset than a whole line of them upset that you're there making small-talk while they're waiting!!

Just say, very politely, "I'm sorry, but there are others waiting for my help." Most people will understand. If they don't, well, you were polite and the other people really will appreciate it.

You these terms. "Sir, please excuse me for sounding rude but if I don't wait on these other people my boss will castrate me (and he will)."
