Jake & I started back in "62 as The Blues Brothers, and quite frankly, we didn't have a clue. Curtis, the orphanage janitor, taught me how to play the harp and showed us as much as he could about the blues, but it was still up to us to put in the countleess hours it takes to get it right.

You've got to do the music you really love. For me, that's the blues, but that was the time and the surroundings that we grew
up in. Once you pick your style, it's best to stick with the hits, so your audience can identify with what you are doing. The crowd is going to be a lot happier if they can sing along, and/or they've been listening to the song on the radio or c.d.

To improve your chops (playing skill) you've got to put in the hours. But these days, you can buy a d.v.d. that has your favorite musician laying out their licks line by line. I would definitely suggest using d.v.d's from the top artists. Locally, the best players are always looking for a place to jam. You've got to hang out with other musicians, and play as often as possible. When you've been practicing on your own, believe me, they will notice, and you'll get a lot more opportunities to play.

Keep control of the band. If it's going to be you and your brother, keep it that way, and make sure when you add a player, that they know you guys are a team, and it's your band. Democracy just doesn't work in a band setting. We always led our guys, but we never bossed them. There is a big difference, and the sooner you develop this skill, the happier you'll be.

Spend time with your axe. One of the great slide guitarists, the late Duane Allman, was a friend of mine. I used to go over to his house, and he'd have blood all over his guitar neck and his fingers where his blisters popped. His mom scereamed at him to tale a break and eat, then he'd come back out and play some more. As crazy as that sounds, many of the greats started the same way.

As far as reading music, most of the rhythm section players (drums, keyboard, guitar, bass) play by ear. The horns often read charts, but you're probably a long way from adding a horn section. Just develop a good ear, and be faithful to the original artist when you copy their music. But don't neglect writing your own material. This is a skill that can take a lot of time to develop, so start now. Who knows? You might have a recording contract in your future.

Some classic rock tunes like "highway to hell" are easy to play but more difficult tunes can make you improve your skills. Self composed music can irprove your creative playing and you can do that just using straight drum beats and power chords. Anyway, have fun... that's the most important thing when playing an instrument.

Try Everclear for the guitar... simple power chords, and each song is pretty much the same, but in a different order, and slight variance in strumming. Good beginner stuff. And good luck... what's your band's name gonna be?
