When he was leaving for the military we talked about marriage and I said that if we were going to get engaged then I needed to have a ring to show that we were a couple. He surprised me with the engagement ring for Christmas.
I left the choosing up to him and was disappointed. It was a very simple diamond which was very nice and pretty, but it surely was not any one month's income like it should be.by etiquette standards.
When my sister got engaged she and her fiance went together to get her engagement ring, and that seemed to work out ok.
So there are pros and cons. I mean, the girl might want a ring that's more expensive than you could afford or want to pay for (installments?) and maybe it would be embarassing if you didn't have the money to buy what she wanted.

Surprise

When I first thought about marriage, I always said that I had to have the biggest perfect diamond. That if my soon to be husband wanted me to be his wife, then he will get me and give me the best. Well, I'm married now and my ring is pretty and almost a full carate. No, it isnt the one that I always said that I would have to have but I wouldnt change it. The ring doesnt matter if you really love your husband. Whatever ring he would propose with would be the best and you wouldnt change it. It's something that he picked and thought that you would love and the ring that showed his love.

Personally I think it is up to him! I think that cut is about the only thing you should drop hints about! If you are not marrying him for money then it shouldn't matter how much it costs! My hubby knew I liked princess and round cut. I had always seen myself with a princess cut solitaire ring. Well I got a princess cut center with 22 round cut diamonds surrounding it! It was nothing like what I had ever thought I would like to wear. Well it was absolutely gorgeous! I love having it on my finger! I honestly wouldn't have cared if he would have givin me the plastic ring off of a soda bottle lid though! I just love him on a level that cant be proven by a piece of jewelry. And the crap about a months salary is load of crap! I married my husband because I truly honestly loved him, not becaus my ring cost X amount of dollars!

I think that it should be left up to the guy. I never told my man what type of ring that I wanted, and the funny thing is that the ring is actually more beautiful than I would have picked out. He has wonderful taste!

First, we agreed to use a certain jewlery store. Then my mother and I went and picked out several bands that I liked. He went later and chose the diamond and had it set in one of the settings that I had already chosen. He chose the timing and the place to ask me to marry him - now that was a surprise! The ring is absolutely beautiful and I get so many compliments. I didn't want him to surprise me, because I was afraid that I might be disappointed - and it would ruin the magic of the moment. Believe me . . . . tell him what you want!!!! You have to wear it for a lifetime!

I'm more concerned with the Feng Shui aspects of the ring, not with the price range. Most likely, the type of ring will be compromised by me and my fiance.

I loved my husband enough to let him choose what ring he wanted to buy me. It's a gift that will symbolize the love he has for you. I guess it really is interesting when you think about it like that. My ring is beautiful it's a tad shy of a carat & he's asked me if I'd like to trade it in on a bigger diamond & different setting for our annivarsary. I said no way. It means too much to me knowing that he took the time to pick it out.

He knows the basics of what I like because he knows me so well, but I'd rather him pick it out. Then again, him proposing in a jewelry store like in Sweet Home Alabama...might be cute. heehee. Either way. I don't want to just tell him what I want though. I'd rather choose it with him there, or I'd rather him buy it. Either way though; I'd want the ring the night he proposed so I could go tell everyone that I was engaged!

I made sure my husband knew what sort of ring I wanted. I'm a simple girl with simple needs, so I didn't want anything flashy. Or gold. And I'm a princess (even though I'm simple), so I needed a princess cut. He knew all of this and easily picked out the perfect ring for me on his own. It's something you're going to be stuck with for the rest of your life (unless you're just "playing" marriage and not actually intending on following through), so you should make sure you're going to love it. :)
