If you are talking about animated graphics for the web, I would recommend you learn how to make animated gifs or flash animation.

Gimp is a free program that will make gif89s, animated gifs. All you have to do is save each frame of your animation in a different layer and when you save as a .gif, choose the option to have it be animated. It is also a great image manipulation program, so you can make whatever graphics you want there too.

If you are ambitious, I would also recommend you learn to make animation using flash. If you are in school, find out if your school carries this program in its art or computer departments. See how you might be able to use the free lab times to learn this software. Or use the free trial version for as long as you can and decide whether or not you think it's worth buying.

A good way to learn how to do animation is to start collecting them. Right click any image you like and if it's a gif, you should be able to save it, and then open it in Gimp. That way you can see each layer and how it was timed.

One last note, if you really want to learn 3d animation, as someone in this pool of answerers has suggested, I would check out highend3d, where there are tutorials and bulletin boards of users who post questions about this kind of work, and where you can get a sense of what it takes to get what the major 3d packages have been able to do so far. And then if you are serious about that, the biggest tech schools in the states are probably Gnomon and Ringling University, but any school that has 3d software is an opportunity for you to learn on your own if all else fails.

Good luck!

Install 3D Studio Max and run some tutorials...But you need to read a lot, to have a lot of patience and to like it... The "cool" animation you are talking about, are the product of teams form 1-2-3 members up to hundreds and, depending on the complexity of it, it can last from a few days up to a few years untill is finished...
