at the Y where I work at, most of the people find it hard to say hello or good-morning or even look me in the eye,not even a passing smile. they only speak if I speak first and you can tell they really don,t want to speak. when I,m talking to someone (white) that does like to talk to me, some of them stare or make faces or rudely talk over me like I,m not there, And everytime something goes wrong or winds up missing, my boss will try and get my name in it when she knows it couln,t possibly be me. I,m the only Afro-american at my job!

That could very well be the case. Just keep doing your job. Speak and smile. Kill them with kindness. They don't have to like you nor become friends with you. Be very careful though if your boss is trying to incriminate you. The next time it happens, schedule a meeting with your boss and talk about it. Let her know exactly how you feel. Ask her if it is a race thing as to why she tries to accuse you. If she says no, then apologize and let her know how left out you feel. You appreciate your job because they are hard to come by in the GWB era, but don't quit until you have something else lined up.

Is this in a big city? A small town? I think that if you are in a small town, you might encounter this but in a more subtle way. Big city...no way! Maybe its the way you are dressed. I live in an area that is very waspy. But there are blacks here. They are treated respectfully. In another town I lived in, which was also predominately white, the blacks were treated at arms length. These blacks were men on the junior college basketball team. They were from Chicago and St. Louis area. Some looked like thugs, some did not. There really is no easy answer to your question with the little bit of information which you have provided. If things are bad, look for another job.
as for mer's comment about there being two types of black people and one is a ******...sadly, I have heard white people say stuff like that and black people. But, there are also white people who are "*******" or white trash. As a matter of fact, most of them have meth labs, 5 kids, on welfare, live in run down trailers and are within 5 miles of where I live!

It is possible that they are racist though I hope that wouldn't be the case at the Y (YMCA?). If these "rude situations" occur frequently then yes, it would be a good idea to look for another job. Your boss sounds unpleasant and may be breaking the law by behaving the way they are. I wish you all the best, whatever you decide to do.

It is definintely racism. Most of them(or nearly all of them) are trying to be subtle about it. As for being the only African-American there, I think that the reason they hired you is to keep the government off their back to prevent a racial discrimination suit. I know about this type of racism. My old boss was leaving the store while there were alot of people. She whispered to one of the cashiers and told her(watch those girls, there are alot of people in here). The girls happened to be black. Apparently my (former) boss didn't know I was listening. She didn't say thay about anyone else or to anyone else. That was racism in a subtle way. My suggestion would be to search for another job and then get out of your current job while you can before any incident happens that could ruin your chances of getting another job.

I don't know where you work, but I was a cashier this summer at a hardware store in a pretty upscale neighborhood. I am white, but they treated me like that just because they thought I was an uneducated worker compared to their master's degrees and such. I am not saying the customers at the Y aren't racist. I think they are, but part of it could be they think of you as having a lower socio-economic status rather than the actual color of your skin.

It is definitely them!! Bless your heart!
One time I was the only white person
working in an all black place, and it
was close to the same situation -
especially with the bosses. I guess
that is just human nature. Do what
I did, find a different job, and then
wherever you go, try to make
everything better by what you learned.

There are racist people of all nationalities,
but it is always going to be a matter
of class, not race that makes the
difference.

High class, low class - that is the REAL difference. NOT color!

I know white people who are rich and racist,
I know black people who are rich and racist.
I know black people who are poor and racist.
I know white people who are poor and racist.

I know rich white people who are high class and not racist.
I know rich black people who are high class and not racist.
I know poor black people who are high class and not racist.
I know poor white people who are high class and not racist.

Nobody who is high class is a racist!

Get it?

Check it out. It is true.

Racists are ALWAYS LOWER CLASS PEOPLE!

Not black or white, but low low low!!

Best of luck to you in your future.(and do your best to stay away from low class people!)

Do you only notice this at your work place or do you feel this way in general? It is conceivable that some people may not like you because of your race. After all, it is not possible to expect everybody to think the same way. But if you think everybody is after you, then you have to start looking at yourself before you look at others.

I guess you are the token black, since you are the African-American to work there. Companies have to hire at least one minority,so they won't get sued for discrimination. Just hang in there or find another job where you feel comfortable. Don't feel like they are beating up on you. Don't let them win.
