Buy a copy of windows XP and use that disc instead. It'll probably cost you somewhere between 80 and 200 dollars though. I would just order a new restore disc from dell. Should be less than 20

try doing a system restore in system tools, this is a in built way of restoring your p.c to a earlier state.much quicker and easier than a full re-install
unfortunately,if you dont have a recovery cd(restore disc) you will have to use a genuine windows xp disc, however if it is still under warranty, dell are under obligation to supply you with a new recovery cd,so contact them if you need to
even if the warranty has run out,if you still have the documentation for your p.c,dell may still supply you with a disc, alot cheaper than a full priced windows xp disc
recovery cds differ from normal xp discs as they recover your p.c to the way it was when you opened the box and took it out, this may include sp2,and all drivers you need, where as a normal xp disc only installs the operating system and you have to install drivers, ect
my advice is contact dell and see what they can do for you,as a past customer ,its good public relations for them to help you
good luck

Get on to Dell for the pukka restore disc.
You could buy WinXP but you'll possibly find that some of the hardware isn't recognised properly and you'll have to download drivers and also software for things like TV tuner cards (if it came with one) for example.

If you bought your computer from dell and you have a product registration sticker on the side of your PC on the sticker you will have a 25 digit code this is the key for your windows installed by dell to re install your system follow the following
start the computer in safe mode open windows explorer click on tools on the menu bar at the top/folder options/view/select show hidden files/untickbox hide protected operating system files you will see the hidden folders on your system then look for a folder in windows named options or preinstall if you have this open the folder and click on the setup.exe file windows will then reinstall itself at the instalation screen when it reboots pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave yor files as they are on the computer you will still need your serial number to re install
