My sister lives in Bismarck. It gets darn cold there and the wind never quits...when it does, it rains. Licensing you car is expensive there. She owns a nice home and they paid 169K for it. Not much of a yard, 1 story ranch with a finished basement and an attached 2 car garage. He works for the government and she works for a tax consultant. Of course it's the capital and it's a bigger city. Food prices were average but the availability is shorter lived than say Texas. Cost more to ship produce up there in the winter, but they have the cash crops up there(wheat, rye, barley, sugar beets and hops) Winters are LONG up there, so your heat bills will be reflected on the season.
Good Luck in your endevours!

I live in South Dakota. It is an ok place to live. It depends on what you like to do. I'm not sure what the average price of a home but I am looking at the paper, and i would say a nice new home starts in the 180's. That's just a gusstimate though. Hope this helps.

We went there on vacation. The food costs twice as much there as in Indiana. We went to a grocery store and found the store brand of food and it was still high.
