I think it was overrated. It wasnt very scary and they just went the gory route to attract fans because people now a days dont care and they continue to go see crap movies like this. Just because it looks violent and bloody or is considered horror, people will go see it. They have no idea what real horror movies are.
Everyone says it's scary because it's based off "actual events" but I dont think anyone knows what these "actual" events are. Director Eli Roth says that he found a Thai website that advertised itself as a "murder vacation," offering users the chance to torture and kill someone for the price of $10,000. Roth later showed the site to Quentin Tarantino and the two developed the idea for the film. So there is your story of the "actual" events it is based off of. So nothing in the film is real other than the fact Eli came up with the idea because of a website he found.
I would also like to comment on the guy a few above me about Quentin Tarantino movies and blood. This is NOT a Tarantino movie film! He really didnt have much to do with this movie. It said "Quentin Tarantino Presents" because he was an executive producer. Exec Producers dont usually have any involvement directly with the film, sometimes they help funding or to help a project get off the ground. In this case Tarantino's name drew people to it even though it was written directed and produced by Eli Roth and co-produced by several others. Quentin was only Exec Producer and got his name on the title because he helped Eli Roth come up with the project and then helped fund & promote it. Thats it. Tarantino had nothing else to do with this film other than Exec. Producer.

Overrated... I've seen more disturbing situations in classic 70s & 80s horrors, and it was really just a gore fest. Fun, I'll admit, but if you're a real horror fan, you'll prob find it lame. Silent Hill was fun though, and I hear Descent is great.

Yeah i saw it the other night!
The best bits were all the sex and when he had his heels slashed!!!
It was so overrated i thought it was going to be the best film yet!
But no i was lied to!
I dont understand how some of these people say they liked it.
It was just another low budget film with aspects of every other horror film ive seen!
And i cant believe they can even afford to make a sequel. What is the point when the first one was so bad!
What happened to the old style horrors like IT, Friday 13th, Halloween etc! old school baby!

ahh the closed eyes of horror fans need to open their eyes to the artistic skills of quienten taratino, In any of his movies expect blood and lots of it, but don't get distracted the blood is there for a reason like just about everything in his movies, and remember it was based off accual events and was made similar to a documentary, however the plot and events were fictional.
