Just watched my neighbors cat kill a squirrel . Is it cruel to let the cat hunt? Or is it cruel not to let the cat hunt?

Good question. I have 4 cats and I would hate to keep them shut up in the house....but at the same time I hate it when they kill things. I really wish they wouldn't. There's no need for it .....they get plenty to eat. It's just their instincts I'm afraid.

What happens to too many cats is cruelty from the ignorance of their owners. Cats can play with cat toys, they don't need to be exposed to unnecessary harm by going outdoors to hunt.
There are too many people with cats who think that cats should be allowed to follow their "natural instincts" to hunt.
The impact on the songbird population has been devastating.

To make matters worse, many of these people don't spay or neuter their cats, so there are way too many kittens born every year who either get euthanized or turn feral to sicken and die in the wild.

no. tht would not be cruel. a dog killing a cat would be cruel tho. cats killing rodents and birds and stuff like tht is how life is. but a dog killing a cat just isnt right. or a dog or a cat injuring a person.
at my old house there was this dog nextdoor and my friend Nick put his hand over the fence and the damn dog bit him and his teeth went right thru Nick's hand. then Nick was rushed to hospital.
oh and tht dumb dog almost ate my hand off!

It's in their nature they can't help it. If my cats kill animals (when I'm not around) there's nothing I can do (you can't train a cat not to kill things), but if I am around I WILL stop them (or try too) cause it hurts me to see them killing another innocent animal when they know damn well they have nice cat food that I spend money on that they come home too and eat everyday. So they aren't killing for food (if they were it would be a different story), but they are killing for fun, so if I can I will try to stop it.
