Is there any other reason than doing cocaine that someone would have a very long pinkie nail? In the last few weeks, I've noticed several nice, respectable guys with this (one a Hispanic waiter at a restaurant, another a white clerk at a store). The rest of their nails were trimmed short. Is there any cultural reason or anything that people would have this?

Originally it was for cocaine, but I think it's become a bit of a fashion thing in Hispanic circles.

I've noticed this on men too. it looks disgusting and every time i see it i think they're cocaine users, i wouldn't give them the time of day

They do the same thing in China, too. I was told it has something to do with good luck. Which makes sense, as only country people have long nails like that. I think it's gross.

These folks use the long pinkie nail to scrape gum off the bottoms of tables...and sometimes off the bottoms of shoes. It is the best nail to use for this purpose. Hope this helps.

i grow a long pinkie nail so because it makes a good nose picker. I'M BEING SERIOUS. i keep it trimmed nicely so that i don't give myself a bloody nose.

Good question! I mean, that's something I never even thought about---but you're right, back in the 80's it was the "coke nail"...but now I think it's the heroin nail.

i worked with a black chef in south carolina who had that, and he swore that the reason he kept his long was because his dad did and it was a family pride sort of thing. he was around 50, married, had grown kids, so, seemed plausible (but, we always wondered...)

I think it is actually used for drug purposes. But a lot of people have tried to make it a cultural or pride or gang thing.
But I honestly think they are only trying to make those up as excuses not to be honest about their drug affiliation.
As for using it for picking your nose, that is just gross. I believe that is what they make kleenex for.
As for using it for cleaning out your ears, that is also gross. I believe they make qtips for that. Also if you have that bad of a wax problem then try using peroxide in the ear.
