In the bible, in the book of Genesis, the people were building a tower to Heaven to reach God. Every one Spoke the same language then. because people are proud of their heritage (no matter how much it really sucks or how screwed up it is) so they don't want to learn someone else's language.
They think, "you should learn mine; it's better than yours" so no one is willing to have a universal language.
