Keeping a turtle safe and healthy requires a committment of time and equipment to provide the right environment. Once the habitat is set up, the day to day care is fairly easy.

For example, most common pond turtles (Red-ear slider, Painted turtles, etc.) need-
- A big, heated tank (roughly 10 gallons of swimming space per inch of turtle, heated to 75-80)
- Powerful filtration or a strong plan for keeping the water clean
- Simulated sunlight, which includes a source of ultraviolet light- UV does not penetrate glass, but turtles need it for health.
- Good basking surfaces heated to about 90
- A plan for up-sizing the tank as the turtle grows, and a plan for handling nesting, etc.

Next is diet. To start, you can use a high-quality pelleted food appropriate for your species. As you learn more, you can supplement it with a lot of different things.

Depending on the turtle you have. I have a Reeve's Turtle named Samson (like Samsonite, the luggage). He's semi-aquatic. They have tanks specifically for turtles. There are turtle habitat kits.

I suggest you do some online research. Figure out what turtle you like and go from there.
