i've always pronounced the university of No-ter Dame (with a long A in dame) and the cathedral Notruh Dame ( with a short A in dame)

The French say No-truh Dom. People in Indiana usually say Noter Dame. Except for a few of us who like to show off our knowledge. LOL

Your best bet would be No-truh - It's more like Notr-uh. I never liked the phonetic alphabet but it could be helpful in this case! It's along 'o' and a semi-mute 'e' at the end. Well - you did ask!

Noter Dame (like lame) for the university and
Notrah Damme (like Jean-Claude Van Damme) for the cathedral.

I grew up in South Bend, trust me you will get laughed out of the state if you pronounce the school's name any other way.

Generally, it's pronounced as "No-ter", though I have found that some TV commentators (and people from that generation and older) tend to pronounce it "No-truh".

This little boy's life could be saved, because for every time you pass this on, a dollar will be donated to the Little Starving Legless Armless Goatless Boy from Baklaliviatatlaglooshen Fund

The first pronunciation would be more American, whereas the second, more in the French dialect. Either way works.
