Understanding is much more important than memorization. Memorization occupies a certain part of your brain that gets easily distracted by other stuff. Understanding requires multiple parts of your brain, that will triangulate and give you more access points to your information than does memorization. Hence, you'll be able to recall better, and HEY YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY LEARN STUFF.

When it comes to studying, understanding is more important than memorization because you have to be able to understand what it is you are studying for, whereas memorization you have memorize each and every detail. However, if you memorize the material, you might be able to forget it as well.

If you are studying something for your own benefit, understanding of course. But if you are studying for a specific test, the format of the test will tell you what is more important.
In history, for example, if the test is going to be multiple choice about dates and names, memorize them! If it is going to be an essay where you synthesize the facts you have learned and draw a conclusion, understanding the connections of the dates and names and key concepts is far more important.
More importantly, things you have memorized tend to fade (facts for a test, not poetry...), while you always retain the gist of what you have understood, even if you have forgotten the details. In real life, you can always look up the details if you understand the concept.

Obviously understanding is more important in the long run. If you don't have time for that, memorization for a test will do the trick. Sometimes it just takes longer for a concept to sink in, so if you don't get it in an abritrary amount of time, don't sweat it. Besides, repetition is the key to learning. Repetition is the key to learning.

Memorization is much more important. It's work. Understanding is easier than falling off a log.

I'm gonna say both...
But the most important one is of course understanding.
Once you've understand a lesson, you'll get no problemo in memorizing sumthin that's already stuck in your head.
But I wouldn't say memory isn't important also.
I mean, even if you already understand sumthin, that sumthin would be useless if you can't memorize anything about it.
Like matemathics, you understand the question... But you forgot completely about the formula, you'll get zero score.
And it goes the same for other subjects..
Still, understanding is number one, indeed...

I think it would depend on the subject. I would say science and math it would be better to understand the concepts in order to do well, but with things like vocabulary it is basically just memorization. Although, I believe understanding something would allow you to do better in the long run.

Understanding- cuz once you understand something, you remember everything anyway, you can picture it in your mind's eye.
If you don't understand something then the only way you could ever pass a test is by memorizing everything and regurgitating it back up, that way is time consuming and you'll never be successful by doing that

Understanding is the key word here because one cannot learn properly anything until it is understood. Memorization is helpful to remember what you've already know.
