This is hard to answer. I have the same problem. 1 gallon = 8 pints - I thought we were supposed to drink 4 pints a day, ie half a gallon.

Dr. Oliveira professor of renal medicine, says, 'When fluid arrives in the gut, it gets absorbed as water, so the bloodstream doesn't care if the fluid started out as tea or coffee.' (This months She magazine page 65)

So, perhaps we are drinking too much?

Also I heard that for optimum efficiency we are supposed to sip a glass of water over a half hour - not drink a whole glass at once.

The only reason you should benefit by more than one gallon is, if you eat a whole a lot, and/or are over weight, sweat a whole lot (in which case you wouldn't be urinating it out, but sweating), or if you're diabetic.

If you want to avoid urinating too much, drink water with meals, and use milk, whole juice, or sports drinks between meals. Add juicy whole fruit, and brothy soup (with not too high sodium) to your daily diet, generally at different ends of the day. These will help maintain a slury of fluid to solid mass ratio that's necessary for continuous digestion. Always take your fluids before the solids in a meal.

If you drink too much then you can get what's called "water poisoning" which first symptom is usually excess hunger. Eat smaller meals through out the day. It'll be about the size of your fist of food solids after it's been chewed, with maximum 3x that in liquid foods. This should be done every 3-5 hours, a fluid with the meal, and perhaps one in between if needed.

The water you drink before meals is necessary to be ahead of the solid food so when it is taken back in through the colon it can be redistributed to the vascular and digestive system in the proper ratio of nutrients for each, or else there is a tendancy toward dehydration, and indigestion over the long term.

Keep meals simple, eat until you're mostly full, it takes 20minutes to register that you're full, so that's how long you should spend chewing a fist full or two of non-watery food. Syliva thoroughly mixed in the chewed food paste is necessary to provide full disgestion.

Most dietary induced illness can be avoided by the simple act of chewing much more than the US average of 4 chews per bite, keeping meals small, and simple, with maximum flavor. Your tatse buds will know, you'll feel more energetic with each bite, when that stops and flavor decreases, you've had enough of that particular meal.

Eat only what smells the best, that's your first information of what your body needs to replace nutirent wise. Small meals make lots of water when not sweating unecessary. Do any changes gradually, find what precisely works best for you.

If none of that works, or anyone else's advice here, talk with a competent health practitioner.

Gallons! What are you? A Horse? You need 2 to 3 litres a day, perhaps more if you are sweating continuously or in a very hot place. Going to the loo a lot is one of the benefits of drinking, keeps the kidneys flushed. It is possible to kill oneself by drinking too much water as it upsets the body's natural electrolyte balance. However, this is rare, and usually is a result of some mental disturbance going untreated.

It's a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day (or 64oz). However if you exercise or do anything that makes you sweat, you should drink more.

Personally I aim for about 100oz of water per day.

Stop drinking about 1-2 hours before bed to prevent going in the middle of the night.

Also if you still feel dehydrated after drinking a *lot* (more than 1 gallon) of water per day, that could be an indication of something more serious (like diabetes). I'd go see a doctor about that.

When you drink the normal amount of Liquids per day which includes water, you shouldn't be dehydrated, nor feel dehydrated! If you are craving liquids more than the health guide suggests for you body weight/height, then you could be diabetic or have some other health issue! Please go to your doctor/GP & inquire about your question & get a check up for your own ease of mind.

Our family Dr. said most people will drink enough water to be hydrated. The only time you require more is if you're sweating, exercising, or taking medication that requires more fluids.

Gallons of water a day is excessive. You might check with your Dr. to see if you have a kidney, bladder or prostate problem that is causing the frequent urination.

Your body needs about 8 glasses of water a day!!! And like you say, if you don't get that your body is dehydrated. So, keep drinking!!! Just don't drink too much before you go to bed.

Your not supposed to drink gallons of water a day...it's glasses or ounces! going to the toilet is a way of flushing out your system and is good for you. I don't see how you can be dehydrated if you drink that much water. Something else must be going on in your system. Try drinking gatorade it's very good for you....

Approx 8 glasses, or 2-3 litres is the recommended amount. You should also drink at least one glass for every drink of tea, coffee or alcohol that you have.
