Nowadays they are symbols that everyone can recognize, like the face of a famous singer or your computer's EXCEL shortcut. It used to mean a small religious painting that made some biblical story obvious (in the days when most people could not read but could recognize a virgin and child on the sign).

Icons are on the desktop or start menus on your computer. You click on them to go into programs. They usually have a picture with words underneath them to say what program it is.

On your desktop (or otherplaces) their the little things that show what things are. Like Internet Explorer, Yahoo Messenger, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word, etc.

well icons are small pictures representing a specific software... for example a small picture of a computer indicates "My computer"
