Valium is extremely addictive, It causes you to calm down after a panic attack or if you have GAD, generalized anxiety disorder, which is so hard to live with, I know because I have it. I eat very healthy, never smoked or drank, but have to take that darn Valium as directed. It helps, but I have never abused it.I also walk 3 miles daily, I want to get off of Valium, so your character could play an addict trying to get off the drug. There are excellent answers here, so read them all to help you.

Valium is more of a downer. When I tried it, well it was alot like getting a strong buzz from alcohol. But damm, Valium is a real puss drug to get addicted to, I mean you might as well hit the bottle.

Valium is a 'downer'; a benzodiazepine 'tranquilizer'. It tends to mellow people out. In high doses it can sedate you. It is also used to control seizures. It can cause serious addiction problems if abused. Withdrawal symptoms are characterized by considerable anxiety and nervousness and insomnia.

Valium (diazepam) is used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders. It is also used to treat certain types of seizure disorders and muscle spasms.

It's definitely a downer. People who are drawn to it usually have a lot of anxiety. If you're in a play, might wanna act high strung, nervous, irritable, then grab the "pills" and chill out. Maybe fall asleep.
