America is suposed to be da land of the free. Why cant we talk to each other our first language, and that doesnt happen to just the hispanics. There are many languages in the world, and english is not the only one in the world. So just let us talk how we talk, cause when u go to France or Puerto Rico or whatever we dont be telling u how 2 talk. So just let us be.

PPL get your facts straight, first this is basiclly chat, I dont need to use perfect grammar even if I know it, second, not all hispanics are from Mexico or Spain, third, I am an American citizen I was born in PA and was raised in PR, ppl dont be racist, when we speak spanish it doesnt mean that we are ralking about you, it only means that we feel comfortable talking our primary language, and dont be hating, America is a free country!!!!!

I can understand in away but it's rude! it's like whispering! you can do it in the privacy of your home. If i'm in a conversation with you But you speak french i can't answer back or help you or whatever the situation may be! it just feels weird for americans. I can go to France and speak French and not have a problem because that the language of that country. English is the language of this country also! You can talk to each other in you language but some people look at it as rude, even if your not talking to them! why? i'm not sure but i was taught that it was rude to speak in another language in front of people that don't speak the language. It makes the other person feel like your hidding something from everyone else! It also makes others feel not included and unsafe. you can say you were not saying anything bad but they won't believe you!

if you lived in russia, what language would you speak around the natives? i dont know if they would tolerate such an attitude from an outsider. this is america. home of the free, free being those that earned their right to be here. this is not mexico or spain. seriously, why would you do if millions of americans all of a sudden decided they wanted to live in mexico, and they all went down there (illegally i might add) REFUSING to learn spanish, driving around with the american flag draped over the hood of their cars and blasting jessica simpson? they are gonna have to start opening burger joints on every corner and maybe a few pizza shops. half of mexico would soon be know as "little america". how would you feel if you were at your local produce stand, trying to find a coconut, you dont speak any english, and all the employees speak english, chattering around you, and you have NO clue what they are saying and you cant even ask for help??? the problem isnt that you people speak spanish, its that you refuse to speak english. if you dont like it, go home and leave US alone!

I think this issue is different than saying that "If I went to France I would learn to speak French" because, as we all know, the United States is thought of as a free democratic society in which people of all cultures should have equal rights and opportunities. Therefore, many Hispanic people feel that they should have the right to use Spanish as their primary language since they are living in a free country.

Also, for those of you who aren't aware, there really insn't a true "official" language of the US on a national level, but, English is the "de facto" national language. (Ironically, "De facto" is a latin term that means "in practice"). Spanish is the second most used language in this country... over 30 million Americans speak Spanish. That's 30 million American citizenzs who should be able to share the same rights the rest of us enjoy.

Personally, I don't find it rude to hear people speaking another language in public. I don't expect other people to tell me how and when to speak, so I do not assume to tell other people either. If they are speaking to me they will have to speak a language I can understand if they want to communicate, but if they aren't then it's none of my business.

I would say that the reason for this is that English is the official language in the United States and in order to function in the society you live in you have to take account of things like the country's culture, which includes language.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having Spanish as your primary language. There are plenty of work opportunities that would allow a person to speak Spanish and I see nothing wrong with speaking Spanish in the home among family. However, I think that in order to avoid being taken advantage of and to make sure you can fully understand everything that is going to come at you in life, you should know how to speak, read, and write in English if you are going to live in America.

But english should be the only one in the US. If you moved to live in France or PR(which is not a US state but the President of US is the Chief of State) they will want you to learn and speak that language if you plan on making that country your home. I speak both spanish and french, but english is the first and only language that should be spoke in most areas and settings in America. I could care less what you speak at home or in public but when your in this country and around other people that dont speak spanish and your in a classroom or work setting, or even a resturant you should have enough respect to speak this countrys language. I think for most spanish people its the idea of being told what to do that makes them angry, dont think of it like that. And you are a American, right? Then why do you refer to yourself as a hispanic that does not like Americans telling you what to do? Not American? You sure make yourself sound that way by the way you talk.

Now this is just my opinion and also based on what I have heard others say and what I feel myself sometimes. People who only speak English get really paranoid when a few people are speaking another language in their presence. If you standing in a mixed ethnic group, it is considered impolite to revert to your native language because it shuts out the other people who don't understand what you are saying. Also, it makes them think you are talking about them in a negative way. You are certainly right about letting you be free but please remember, it is considered very rude to do that. Have you ever actually spoken Spanish in a group of mixed ethnic backgrounds just so you can say something nasty about someone and they won't understand? I usually try to communicate with Hispanics in their own language (what little I know). I
have also noted that some Hispanics will pretend they do not understand you and that is not always true. These are things I have noted. I come from an area of 80% Hispanic population so I know a lot of the words that mean negative things. Just always be polite to everyone and you don't have to worry. Remember, there are a lot of bigots in this land of ours and hopefully that will change some day. Buenos Dias, mi amigo.

We're being inundated with Spanish speaking folks. They come here with an attitude. The don't want to be American. They don't want to learn English or speak it or use it for business. They don't even fly the American flag when they protest. The last I check the largest ancestry group is not Spanish, it's German. And we haven't changed to accommodate them. I would like to see the Spanish immigrants use English and learn the ways of their new country. If I go to France to live and work, I will learn French. If I go to Peurto Rico to live and work I will learn spanish. Even when I go as a tourist, I try to speak the mother tongue of the host country. If you aren't going to at least try to learn are ways as the spanish immigrants reputation has come to be then I don't want to be bothered hearing your complaints.

I'm English, and if people want to live in England then they should speak the English language in public. Not to do so is ignorant. My Dad (who is dead now) served in the army (WW2) and was stationed in Wales for a while, (part of the UK, but have their own language) and when he went into a pub or shop the locals were speaking English, and when they heard he was from England they would revert to speaking Welsh. Funny for them but it incites hatred.

Maybe the States are tired of providing special social programs to all the hispanics that can't get up to speed because they refuse to learn the language of the land. Are you people just lazy or stupid. Your county is a complete mess, why should you go to the States and try to bring them down as well.

If you have so much pride in your heritage, stay in your own damn country speak your own language and clean up your own damn mess without asking the states for a handout.

GO HOME !!!

How far do you think most of us would get in Mexico if we didn't speak Spanish? Especially if we were in Mexico illegally. Or if we flew the Mexican flag upside down? Or demanded free schooling? Or free health care? Or demanded that our children be taught in English?
BTW,in many European countries, most people speak English as a second language, as do many Japanese and Chinese.
