The definition of a bug is a "general term for any insect or similar creeping or crawling invertebrate." Although spiders are creepy they are not an invertebrate and they are not an insect due to the fact they have eight legs not six. Also they do not have a hard shell.

Spiders are called bugs by most people. But spiders are not insects. Insects have six legs and spiders have eight. Spiders are aracnids and they have jointed legs. Spiders hunt and trap insects in their webs, inject venom into their prey to liquify them, thus enabling the spider to drink their digestive parts.

I do not believe they are considered insects. I did a bug project in 8th grade, and we were not allowed to have spiders or moths or butterflies because they were not insects.
