intuition is without thought or any organized thinking: it is direct. inference is contrived, arrived through the mind, through logic and therefore, bound by its limitations.

Inference is based strongly in facts and laws of logic.
Intuition is based on a broader human experience and makes more conjectures, and thus can work with less facts.
Intuition is more flexible, but is wrong more often.

As beings, we have our instinctual selves and our higher selves. Both are essential in any form of decision-making. Our instinctual self answers to the more basic form of what we are; the place within us that was "born knowing". Much of instinct has little or nothing to do with what we've been taught, what we've learned, or what we've considered, but has more to do with what we derive in a moment of quick judgement. It is essential to our ability to react quickly and accurate, and is essential to the perpetuation of our species.
Inference is more an act of our higher selves. It is the portion of our being that we in essence "raise" through nurture and care. We create our logic by exposing it to different subject matter, forcing it to analyze ideas, and living through certain experiences. This portion of our being is also essential to understanding life, because it is the part of us that we in essence "create" and then utilize as necessary to better the world around us. Inference forces ourselves to look as objectively as we can, using assumed ideas, to understand the world around us, and move forward with actions based on such understandings.
One caveat, this is simply my opinion, the act of inference on my part based on observations and experiences I have gone through and absorbed throughout the years.
Good luck!
