where are you from?

I come from the small town of Mayerthorpe in Alberta, Canada.

It once made national headlines because it had such bad drinking water. More recently it made headlines for the murders of several policemen by a local drug growing pedophile.

It is little more than a pot-hole in the highway between Edmonton (the capital city) and the oil fields to the north. It is positioned idyllically on reclaimed swampland, presumably so that a corrupt freemason of not so long ago, could make a small fortune.

All young people try to escape and fortunately most do. It's racist and decrepid. Almost all the money that flows through it comes from the government in one way or another, and yet many of its citizens don't have the sense to shop locally, so now they're a one grocery store town.

When they had the opportunity for some jobs to be created and some outside money to be invested, they turned down the packing plant. God forbid young people actually be able to get a job there.

Some fool even had the brilliant idea of spray-painting 'Gooks' on the side of a Vietnamese run business. It doubled as their home and they had children in school locally, so naturally they left town. The business was taken over by you guessed it, another fool. I haven't kept up to date, but I'll bet it was run into the ground. Last I'd seen, he'd replaced a wide selection of products with a truck load of coca cola. Brilliant!

They even have some sort of mud festival. The enticing line they use is, 'Don't be a stick in the mud'. And a mural showing participants is slathered onto a local drug store. The biggest depiction is of a child that they somehow managed to make appear about 60 years old.

Tourists should go there just to point and laugh. After they cry.
