I live in a small village in Mazury Poland.
We are deep in the Polish countryside.
Most around here are farmers or unemployed.
The drinking here goes on at the local shop
many farmers and those with some work will milk the cows at 05:00 then go to the shop for a bottle of beer or three.
Some of the real local characters will have a few Glasses of home brew vodka with breakfast.
Many are constantly under the influence.
You can see some of the locals often in ditches at the side of the lane at 09:30 having fallen from their bikes whilst drunk.
The people in our community are very poor and live without indoor toilet facilities, even the out door loo has no water connected to it.
These are fantastic people and i consider myself privileged to live within their community
I am fortunate to have all mod con's in my home.
Its a happy place where drinking is a very important part of every day life.
I drink the home brew potato vodka myself when at BBQs, parties etc. no one seems to know the strength of it, but it gives a fair old kick.
In our local shop a bottle of good strong beer costs less than 50pence and after three you are best part drunk.
It is normally at this point that you end up at one of the neighbours houses and the home brew vodka stars to flow.
One chap that works for me drinks three warm beers for his breakfast.
Why not get over to Poland yourself and try a drop?

You know, there are families and families... I believe most Poles DON'T drink vodka for breakfast. The potato vodka is probably more common in the country than in the city because it's cheaper to make it than to buy the "standard" ones.

Most polish people don't drink vodka for breakfast. I would guess only alcoholics do. My whole family is polish, and I lived there for 15 years and we did not drink vodka for breakfast, sorry.

I'd say it's as likely as for Americans to drink bourbon for breakfast.

Sure, there probably are such people, but they make the (sick, IMHO) margin. Most of us do not start our day with alcohol.
My guess is that you uncle is simply kidding you.

Now, as for vodkas - AFAIK in the whole Eastern Europe, vodka is alcohol made either of potatoes or rye. Sure, you can make alcohol off almost anything, but beetroot or anything else isn't going to be accepted as vodka-base here. Like, for example, you couldn't make alcohol off corn and call it whisky.
