Racism continues to exist; because there are those who stonewall to old habits and deceptions. Within any facet of society it prevails. Oprah has been the victim in recent years. There was store in Chicago; where she was discriminated. I ask you; what was in the store that Oprah couldn't afford; including the store itself?
Racism persist because of stereotypes, misleading avenues of the media, and the fear of the unknown. Exposure is the cure; with open dialog, commingled with respect. Without hesitation; I'm incline to believe that racism is not an overreaction but realistic on the most serious level of pragmatically. Thank you for the question, because it opens doors that need to be aired out!

Sadly racism is real my friend.
But not as most people tend to view it.
See people in general tend to be so unaccepting of change and growth that when presented with people vastly different than themselves universally throughout history the first social response is horror then looking for some means to create a "separate but equal" state so the "inferior" ones can live apart from us and we can minimize our social discomfort and tend to live once again in our comfortable darkness of ignorance and lack of acceptance.
You see this usually based on obvious, external factors: skin or eye color, hair style, texture or shape.... skin color (even in the Black community where a common "issue" today is is he/she really black? Are "they" one of "us")?
See the fear is if we are around them we will lose our individuality and our uniqueness and become either like them or more "generic" than we are now.
Yes racism is real and will always be so in some form.
Some people of course do overreact, but nonetheless, to ever judge anyone else isn't our place is it?
Or am I wrong (and I'm sure many will tell me I am!)
People have to have some sort of "order" and "system" - most people can't accept anyone and few things at true face value.
We have to label it ~ make a moral judgement about it ~ then decide how we "deal" with or "endure" it.
Man, for all his time on Earth, sadly, seems to have only progressed this far in his mindset.
Pitiful, when you consider it. But then again go get an electronic gadget and quit thinking.

I think racism is a serious problem... but it really depends on where you live, and who you are surrounded with, the extent of racism. I have lived in Los Angeles, probably the most racially diverse city in the world, and I can tell you I've seen racism....but I have also seen unity between races. Because of my liberal perspective, and the people I surround myself with, I believe that races can coexist peacfully among each other and learn from each other. That's a utopian world for me. Sadly, that is not the reality. Well in the San Fernando Valley, you can see a glimpse of this utopia....but in the inner-city and in conservative states, hate crimes still exist and racism still does to. If you've lived in California all your life and you go live somewhere in rural Texas for a couple days, you will see racism. I'm positive. People's values differ among different communities.

People simply need to see the bigger picture...we are a phyla of a genre of beings on this planet...just like other beings, that family encompasses great diversity in appearance & performance...we have been "Humanly Managed" by our governments & religious powers to see our diversities as separateness--instead of the reality of combined creativity toward better livelihood on this planet...Our "better living" is defined by these wonders, dished out to those specified by them, and done in such an elegant way so as to attract/maintain the majority trust, thus perpetuating their "rule".
Would we not be a dangerous sort upon this Earth, if we saw each other as a sharers in a lifetime, companions walking on the same pathway, and each individual was truely a necessary part of the Whole. The only ones this would be dangerous to would be the present powers that be, now wouldn't it?????

I think the issue of racism is played down within the media due to its sheer prevailance. Frankly, its rife in many areas of public life, and i think my generation is the first to truely move towards some form of equality..look at the expansion of RnB music, Dubb, Bass etc...ok, so we may not like it and call it Chavy, but its an acceptance of Black culture that should be praised

Racism is alive and thriving. Being a minority you see it everyday or at least more often then a non minority. People outright insult you then scream to hills "Freedom of speech". We all know we have freedom of speech, but freedom of speech also still gets negative messages out as well as good. So as long as people ave freedom of speech racism is will never die, because there is always going to be someone who who dislikes someone Else for their differences. Instead of embracing those differences and learning from them.

I think that if someone overreacts about racism it might mean that they had an experience that hurt them or their family. I get annoyed when people on this site claim they aren't racist but still say racist things. It is all about good education and socializing with all cultures. It is very real and unfortunately still exists today.

racism sucks and 40 years ago it was very real and very painful to a large part of society, I think we have come a long way in leveling the field, but there are some back water hicks out there that think skin color holds value.

Many times the word racist is misused, although it certainly does exist, and will continue to. It is another sin, common to mankind,
and can be 'cured' only by love.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV)
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

It's real!!! Racism stinks for real! I think people experience different degrees of racism. If I am out alone white men will approach me, if I have my black grandchildren out, blacks will smile, black men will try to approach me, whites stay clear. Now if I am out with all of them(two being white)..I get stared at alot or people will ask"Are you babysittin'"? Men have dumped me due to having black grandchildren..what's that got to do with WHO I AM?? I feel a responsibility to educate myself on black history...to no longer live in ignorance but know we are all children of the same God.
