Brock Edward Lesnar (born July 12, 1977 in Webster, South Dakota) is an American professional wrestler, former professional American football player and aspiring mixed martial artist.

Lesnar began wrestling in 2000, and debuted on World Wrestling Entertainment television in 2001. Between 2002 and 2004 he held the WWE Championship on three occasions, main-evented WrestleMania XIX and won both King of the Ring and the Royal Rumble. Following an acrimonious departure from WWE in 2004, Lesnar played several games for the Minnesota Vikings before returning to professional wrestling in 2005, this time in Japan, where he wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling and won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship. After leaving NJPW in 2006, Lesnar announced his intent to become a mixed martial artist.

Amateur wrestling
Before entering professional wrestling, Lesnar wrestled at Webster High School in Webster, South Dakota. His coach throughout grade school and high school was John Schiley. He qualified for the state wrestling tournament several times, but was unable to get first place.

Lesnar later attended the University of Minnesota on a full wrestling scholarship, where his roommate was fellow future professional wrestler Shelton Benjamin. Lesnar won the 2000 National Collegiate Athletic Association wrestling championships as a heavyweight after placing second in 1999. Prior to joining the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Lesnar also wrestled at Bismarck State College in Bismarck, North Dakota.

[edit]
World Wrestling Federation/Entertainment
In 2000, Lesnar signed a contract with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). He was sent to the WWF developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling, where he trained under Danny Davis before debuting in October 2002. Lesnar went on to form a tag team known as the Minnesota Stretching Crew (a reference to the Minnesota Wrecking Crew) with his former college roommate, Shelton Benjamin. Lesnar and Benjamin won the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship on three occasions before Lesnar was called up to the active roster.

Lesnar wrestled several dark matches in 2001 and 2002 before debuting on WWF television on the March 18, 2002 episode of RAW, attacking Al Snow, Maven and Spike Dudley in the course of a match. He was accompanied by Paul Heyman, who referred to Lesnar as "The Next Big Thing." After the World Wrestling Federation was renamed World Wrestling Entertainment, Lesnar was drafted to the RAW brand of WWE.

Lesnar was pushed strongly, squashing his opponents and frequently winning his matches by knockout. He remained undefeated until November 2002, although he did lose to Rob Van Dam via disqualification.

Lesnar's first feud was with the Hardy Boyz. Lesnar was seen giving Matt Hardy an F-5 on the steel ramp, which led to an angered Jeff Hardy wanting revenge on Lesnar. In Lesnar's first official televised match, the two squared off at Backlash 2002, where Lesnar was able to kick out of Hardy's finisher. He would go onto to destroy Hardy and win the match by TKO. The Hardy Boyz would continue to face Brock over the following months, with Lesnar always ending up victorious. At Judgement Day 2002 , Lesnar gained the upper hand on the Hardy Boyz tag team before tagging his partner Heyman in to take the win for the team.

In June 2002, Lesnar won the 2002 King of the Ring tournament, defeating Rob Van Dam in the final round. This victory earned him a shot at the WWE Undisputed Championship at SummerSlam 2002 where he defeated The Rock to then become the youngest WWE Champion. Shortly afterwards during an open season between the RAW and SmackDown! brands, Lesnar defected along with Heyman to the SmackDown! brand.

While on SmackDown!, Hulk Hogan challenged Lesnar for his #1 Contendership for the title, reminding him that he (Hogan) has always overcome the odds. Lesnar would go on later that night to destroy Hogan, winning when Hogan passed out in a bear hug.

In the main event of SummerSlam 2002, Lesnar defeated The Rock to become the new and final WWE Undisputed Champion. Lesnar, at age 25, was then the youngest WWE Champion ever (as of 2006, he is still technically the youngest WWE Champion ever, but Randy Orton is the youngest world champion in WWE history, having won the World Heavyweight Championship at 24). Due to the requirements of the Undisputed Champion defending on both shows, RAW general manager Eric Bischoff expected Lesnar to be able to return on RAW the next night. However, SmackDown! general manager Stephanie McMahon announced that Lesnar's contract required that he would defend the title only on SmackDown!, forcing Bischoff to separate the World Heavyweight Championship from the WWE Championship and in turn making the title lose its "Undisputed" name.

In the autumn of 2002 Lesnar feuded with The Undertaker. Lesnar and The Undertaker wrestled to a no-contest at Unforgiven on September 22, when they started fighting and ignored the authority of the referee. A rematch was set for No Mercy on October 20. General Manager Stephanie McMahon made the match at No Mercy a Hell In A Cell match, which was The Undertaker's specialty. Lesnar would defeat The Undertaker at No Mercy, winning by countering The Undertaker's Tombstone Piledriver into an F-5, giving him the victory.

Brock's next opponent was then the 500 lb Big Show. Lesnar's agent, Paul Heyman, was convinced more than anyone that Lesnar couldn't win, as he tried to talk him out of defending the title. Lesnar refused, and went on to lose the championship in November at the Survivor Series 2002 pay-per-view to The Big Show in under six minutes when, after giving an F-5 to the 500-pounder, he was betrayed by Paul Heyman.

Following Survivor Series, Heyman made it clear that Lesnar would not get a rematch, even going so far as to sneak a special clause in his contract. Prior to entering the Royal Rumble on January 19, 2003, Lesnar faced The Big Show in a qualification match where the winner could enter the Rumble and the loser couldn't. Despite interference from Paul Heyman, Lesnar defeated The Big Show with a F-5. He would go on to enter the Rumble as the #29 entrant.

After winning the 2003 Royal Rumble match in January 2003, Lesnar spent the next two months feuding with Kurt Angle. Angle had Paul Heyman, The Big Show, and Team Angle (Shelton Benjamin, Lesnar's former partner, and Charlie Haas) behind him, but Lesnar overcame all these opponents. The match between Lesnar and Angle going into WrestleMania XIX was considered a dream match by traditional fans, as it marked the first time in WWE history that two accomplished amateur wrestlers (Angle with his Olympic gold medal and two NCAA Heavyweight Championships, Lesnar with his 2000 NCAA Heavyweight Championship) met in a ring. Lesnar regained the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania XIX from Kurt Angle. Toward the end of the match, he botched a shooting star press; despite having landed the move successfully in OVW, in this match he overestimated the distance he was capable of jumping for the move and under-rotated, slamming his head into Angle's side and ribcage. This stunned Brock and forced Angle to improvise the finish of the match. Lesnar suffered a concussion. Later Brock admitted in interviews that this event took away some of his confidence and led to him realizing that he could get seriously hurt in the ring. This realization made him second guess his vocation and eventually helped in his decision to briefly leave professional wrestling and try out for the NFL (particularly the Minnesota Vikings; see the National Football League section).

In August on SmackDown!, Lesnar faced amputee wrestler Zach Gowen in Gowen's hometown. To cement his character's new "mean streak", he "broke" Gowen's remaining leg in front of his little brother and mother and later, Lesnar kidnapped him, and pushed him down a flight of stairs from his wheelchair. This was all an attempt to make Brock a heel to build toward a rematch with Kurt Angle. Despite his newfound aggression, Lesnar would lose to Kurt Angle in a rematch at SummerSlam when Angle made Lesnar tap out to the Ankle Lock. Angle was the first (of two wrestlers) to gain a submission victory over Lesnar. Chris Benoit would be the only other wrestler to make Brock tap out at Survivor Series 2003 (this, however, was a tag-team match where no title was on the line).

The rematch was an Iron Man Match, which Brock won five falls to Angle's four, making up the WWE Champion, yet again. Angle, however, had Lesnar trapped in the ankle lock as the final bell rang. The match, overall, was considered their best and it won PWI Match of the Year honors for 2003. Angle and Lesnar also won Feud of the Year honors for their war over the WWE Championship and their great matches at WrestleMania, Vengeance, and SummerSlam, as well as the Iron Man Match on "SmackDown!"

Lesnar realigned himself with Paul Heyman after Heyman became general manager of Smackdown, and had a brief feud with Hardcore Holly. In this storyline, Holly got some revenge from Lesnar for breaking his neck (during a previous match between the two, a botched powerbomb resulted in Holly needing neck surgery and being out of action for several months). The feud however ended when Lesnar defeated Holly to retain the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble 2004. In February he lost the title to Eddie Guerrero at the No Way Out 2004 event in what was considered Guerrero's biggest career win..

Before losing the WWE Championship to Guerrero, Lesnar had begun a feud with RAW's Goldberg. Lesnar had called Goldberg, a 'Brock wanna be'. A confrontation between the two had been highly anticipated from Brock's debut, due to the way Lesnar was pushed. Goldberg was regarded as the WCW phenom of 1998, whereas Lesnar was regarded as the WWE phenom of 2002-03. The crowd even chanted "Goldberg! Goldberg" in some of Brock's early matches. The feud began at Survivor Series 2003, while both men were champions of their respective brands. Lesnar attacked Goldberg at the Royal Rumble 2004, with Goldberg retailiating at No Way Out in Lesnar's match against Guerrero. This set up an interbrand match for WrestleMania XX between the two.

During the feud with Goldberg, Lesnar also was feuding with RAW's "Stone Cold" Steve Austin (who was shown suggesting to Goldberg that he attack Lesnar at No Way Out 2004). When Lesnar stole Stone Cold's four-wheeler, Austin was inserted as the Special Guest Referee for the Wrestlemania match. Behind the scenes, it was widely known known that the match would be Goldberg's last in WWE, however only a week before WrestleMania rumours surfaced Lesnar too was leaving, in order to pursue a career in the NFL. As a result, the fans at Madison Square Garden jeered both wrestlers with chants of "you sold out." Neither man was thought to have given his best effort in the match in what was supposed to be a clash of titans. Lesnar was said to be particularly shaken by this reaction. Because both men were leaving WWE, it was clear that the only man who would go over in the match would be Austin. Sure enough, although Goldberg won the match, both men were given Stone Cold Stunners by Austin on their way out.

[edit]
National Football League
After his final match at WrestleMania XX, Lesnar sidelined his career in WWE to pursue a career in the National Football League. This move upset many people, as the WWE had invested heavily in Lesnar. After playing in a few pre-season games for the Minnesota Vikings, Lesnar was eventually cut from the team. Lesnar had suffered injuries in a motorcycle accident during the summer of 2004, which along with lack of football practice prevented him from performing well enough to remain in a Vikings practice squad position. He declined to accept an invitation to play as a representative of the Vikings in NFL Europe. He made no attempts to sign with an AFL or CFL team. Lesnar is listed as a free agent in Madden NFL '06. There was a producer-made model of Lesnar in Madden NFL '06. Despite the name, the model looked almost nothing like the real Lesnar.

[edit]
Lawsuit with WWE
Lesnar had previously signed a no-compete clause in order to be released from his contract with WWE, which prohibited him from working for any other sports entertainment or mixed martial arts companies before 2010. Lesnar had anticipated leaving wrestling entirely, but his inability to secure a career in professional football led to him challenging this ruling in court. WWE responded by demanding damages as a result of Lesnar allegedly breaching the agreement by appearing at a New Japan Pro Wrestling show in 2004. In July 2005, the two sides dropped their claims and entered negotiations to renew their relationship. Recently, WWE had offered Brock a contract, but on August 2, 2005, WWE's official website reported that Lesnar has withdrawn from any involvement with the company. Many people questioned the logic of this decision.

The lawsuit was entered into settlement on September 21, 2005, but talks broke down.

On January 14, 2006, Judge Christopher Droney stated that unless WWE gave him a good argument between then and January 25, 2006, he would rule in favor of Brock Lesnar, giving him a summary judgment. This would have enabled Lesnar to work anywhere he wanted immediately. WWE was later granted a deadline postponement. WWE reportedly doesn't want to settle out of court with Lesnar, and didn't want to take any actions that might be seen as "backing down".

On April 25, 2006, World Wrestling Entertainment has announced on their official website WWE.com, "WWE and Lesnar have mutually come to a settlement and have decided, due to its confidentiallty, not to discuss the details of the case."

On June 12, 2006, A federal judge dismissed Lesnar's lawsuit against WWE after both parties requested for the case to be dismissed.

[edit]
New Japan Pro Wrestling
On October 8, 2005, Lesnar won the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in a three-way match at a New Japan Pro Wrestling show in the Tokyo Dome, which included the then-champion Kazuyuki Fujita and Masahiro Chono. He won the match by pinning Masahiro Chono after an F-5, which he had renamed "The Verdict", since WWE owns the trademark on the F-5 name. After the match, he stated that this name was referring to his lawsuit against WWE. The match was his first pro wrestling match since leaving WWE.

On December 6, 2005 WWE filed a motion for a temporary restraining order to prevent Lesnar from continuing to work with NJPW, but the court did not grant it, and thus Lesnar had two non-title victories against Manabu Nakanishi and Yuji Nagata. Lesnar successfully defended his championship on January 4, 2006 against former champion Shinsuke Nakamura.

On January 13, 2006. WWE once again filed an injunction against Lesnar to stop him from defending the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship on March 19, but evidently this was not enforced (nor granted), as he would go on to have both a tag team match with Shinsuke Nakamura against Akebono and Riki Choshu on February 19, 2006 which was won after a Verdict to Choshu.

On March 19, 2006, Brock Lesnar retained his championship, defeating Akebono with a DDT and not a Verdict, but while the referee was down on the mat he hit the former Sumo wrestler with the IWGP belt. This was the first American vs American title match in NJPW since Vader vs Stan Hansen in 1990.

Lesnar successfully defended his title against the winner of the New Japan Cup,Giant Bernard, on May 3, 2006 in Fukuoka.

On July 15, 2006, New Japan Pro Wrestling announced that Brock Lesnar had been stripped of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship as he will no longer be returning to defend the title due to "visa issues". A tournament was held on July 16 to determine the new champion, which was won by Hiroshi Tanahashi, the man Lesnar was originally scheduled to face.

K-1 Hero's / Mixed Martial Arts
On April 28, 2006, Brock Lesnar suddenly appeared inside the ring after the final match of K-1 Hero's Las Vegas and has since signed a deal with the K-1/Hero's. It is anticipated his debut will be in Oct 2006 at Yokohama Arena. He is currently training with Miletich Fighting Systems under UFC legend Pat Miletich. Brock Lesnar announced on 12 August 2006 in Las Vegas that he has joined the K-1 promotion and will have his first Mixed martial arts match in 2007. Lesnar has been training for awhile now and MMA legend Royce Gracie announced that he will serve as Lesnar's trainer. Right now, Lesnar's first fight is scheduled for February for K-1's Hero's group.

Career
[edit]
World Championship Wrestling
Paul Wight became involved in professional wrestling when Danny Bonaduce introduced him to Hulk Hogan at a charity basketball event in early 1995. Wight trained at Larry Sharpe's Monster Factory for seven months and then signed with World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He polished his wrestling skills at the WCW Power Plant, where at one point he possessed the ability to perform a moonsault. [citation needed]

Wight debuted in WCW during the 1995 Bash At The Beach. He introduced himself as The Giant, claiming to be the son of André the Giant, and blaming Hogan for the death of his "father". He joined the Dungeon of Doom, who were at war with Hulk Hogan and his allies, and immediately began a heated feud with Hogan. At the 1995 Fall Brawl, Wight attacked Hogan while he was fighting the leader of the Dungeon of Doom, "Taskmaster" Kevin Sullivan, in a cage match. After Wight destroyed Hogan's Harley-Davidson Motorcycle using a monster truck, Hogan challenged him to a "Monster Truck Battle" at Halloween Havoc in Detroit.

On October 29, 1995, the Battle took place atop Cobo Hall, with each man driving a monster truck and trying to force the other truck out of a circle, as in a Sumo Wrestling Contest. Hogan won the match when Wight descended from his vehicle and appeared to fall from the roof. Later that night, Wight came to the ring with The Taskmaster and challenged Hogan for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in what would be his WCW in-ring debut. Wight was awarded the victory by disqualification after interference from Jimmy Hart, Hogan's manager. Hart then revealed that the contract Hogan had signed (which he had written) had a clause stating that the title would change hands on a disqualification, and, as Hart had intentionally caused a disqualification, Wight was the new World Heavyweight Champion. The title was held up one week later as a result of the controversial decision.

Wight as The Giant in WCW.Wight tried to reclaim the title at World War 3 but was foiled by Hogan, and "Macho Man" Randy Savage won the vacant title. (This plot partly echoed a WWF storyline of several years earlier, wherein André the Giant's "adviser" Ted Dibiase cheated Hogan out of the WWF title, which was held up as a result of controversy, and then won by Savage). Wight teamed with Ric Flair to defeat Hogan and Savage at the January 23, 1996 Clash of the Champions XXXII, but was decisively beaten by Hogan in a cage match at SuperBrawl.

After a short feud with The Loch Ness Monster, Wight eventually became a face, winning the World Heavyweight Championship a second time by defeating Ric Flair. After Hogan turned heel by forming the New World Order, he defeated Wight for the Championship at the 1996 Hog Wild following interference from Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. Wight would join the nWo twenty three days later, citing Ted DiBiase's money as his primary motivation. He feuded with Lex Luger and the Four Horsemen.

After being thrown out of the nWo on December 30, 1996 for asking Hogan for a World Heavyweight Championship title shot, Wight fought against the nWo along with Sting and Lex Luger, winning the WCW World Tag Team Championships twice. In 1997 he began a feud with nWo member Kevin Nash, who constantly dodged Wight, failing to appear for their scheduled match at the 1997 StarrCade. In 1998 at Souled Out the two finally met in the ring, but Nash accidentally injured Wight's neck when he botched a Jackknife Powerbomb. When Nash left the nWo and formed his own stable, the Wolfpac, Wight rejoined the nWo to oppose Nash and his allies. Nash would eventually end Wight's WCW career when he defeated him following interference from Scott Hall and Eric Bischoff. He left WCW in 1999 for the World Wrestling Federation.

[edit]
World Wrestling Federation
Wight signed a multi-year contract with the WWF in early 1999. He debuted as a member of Vince McMahon's heel stable, The Corporation, at the February 1999 St. Valentine's Day Massacre event. During the McMahon vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin cage match, Wight broke through the ring and attacked Austin. However, he cost McMahon the match when he threw Austin into the side of the cage and the cage broke, spilling Austin outside to the floor and granting him the victory. This meant that Austin would face The Rock at WrestleMania XV for the WWF Championship.

Wight performed as "Big Nasty" Paul White for several weeks (a jab at "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash) and was eventually renamed "The Big Show" Paul Wight and acted as McMahon's bodyguard. Wight later dropped his real name, and was from then on referred to simply as "The Big Show". McMahon wanted to ensure that Corporation member The Rock would retain his title at WrestleMania, so he faced Mick Foley (Mankind) at WrestleMania for the right to referee the main event. Wight incapacitated Mankind, but disqualified himself in the process, meaning that neither man would be referee. After a furious McMahon slapped Wight, he punched McMahon and was arrested, turning face. Wight concluded his feud with Foley in a Boiler Room Brawl before joining Mankind, Test and Ken Shamrock in a stable known as "The Union" who fought against the Corporation, and later against the Corporate Ministry. Wight and Undertaker later formed an unlikely alliance against X-Pac and Kane, with Wight turning heel in the process. Wight and The Undertaker twice won the WWF Tag Team Championships.

When The Undertaker was sidelined with injuries, Wight set his sights on the WWF World Heavyweight Championship, turning face once more. He participated in the Six Pack Challenge for the belt at the 1999 Unforgiven, but failed to win. After Steve Austin was run-over at the 1999 Survivor Series, Wight was given his place in the triple threat match for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship, where he pinned Triple H in a match that also featured The Rock to become champion.

At the same time, Wight feuded with the Big Boss Man. After it was announced that Wight's father was terminally ill with cancer, the Boss Man had one of his crooked police colleagues (falsely) inform Wight that his father had died, and then mocked Wight's tearful reaction. Several weeks later, when it was announced Wight's father had actually died (in reality, Wight's father had died years before), the Boss Man first interrupted the ten bell toll, then later invaded the funeral and used a chain to couple the coffin to the hearse, towing the coffin away with a grief stricken Wight clinging on to it. He also visited Wight's mother and forced her to reveal that Wight's father was a different man, leading Boss Man to refer to him as a "bastard" on every possible occasion (this would later become one of Wight's nicknames, with a piece of WWF merchandise even bearing the slogan "Big Nasty Bastard"). During the 1999 Armageddon, The Boss Man faced Wight for the title, but even the presence of his protégé Prince Albert did not offset Wight's considerable size advantage, and Wight defeated him to retain the title.

On the January 3, 2000, episode of RAW Triple H defeated Wight for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship, using a title shot that he had won from Vince McMahon at Armageddon. Trying to regain the title, Wight participated in the 2000 Royal Rumble, and was the runner up, losing to The Rock. Wight was convinced that he had won, and eventually produced a video tape that showed The Rock's feet striking the ground first. He was then given a match with The Rock at No Way Out, with the WrestleMania title shot on the line. Wight defeated The Rock when Shane McMahon interfered, knocking The Rock out with a chair shot. The Rock was desperate to reclaim his title shot, and eventually agreed to a match with Wight on the March 13, 2000 episode of RAW - if he won, the WrestleMania title match would become a triple threat match, and if he lost, he would retire from the WWF. Shane McMahon, now actively supporting Wight's bid to become champion, appointed himself as the special guest referee. However, The Rock triumphed when Vince McMahon assaulted Shane and donned the referee shirt, personally making the three count following a Rock Bottom.

On the March 20, 2000 episode of RAW, Triple H agreed to defend the title against The Rock and Wight on the condition that the match would not take place at WrestleMania. Triple H managed to pin Wight, but Linda McMahon forced him to defend the title at WrestleMania in a fatal four way elimination match, with Mick Foley as the fourth man. Wight was the first man eliminated from the match at WrestleMania 2000 after the other three competitors worked together against him.

After WrestleMania, Wight began to turn face once more. He would wrestle his matches while mimicking other wrestlers, lampooning Rikishi as Showkishi, The Berzerker as Shonan The Barbarian and Val Venis as The Big Showbowski. He faced Kurt Angle at Backlash 2000, and came to the ring dressed like his friend and role model Hulk Hogan. "The Showster" defeated Angle with ease.

Wight began feuding with his former manager Shane McMahon after he was shown mocking Wight as slow, stupid and highly suggestible. At Judgment Day 2000 on May 21, Shane defeated Wight in a falls count anywhere match following interference from Big Boss Man, Bull Buchanan, Test and Albert. Wight returned two months later, apparently intending to gain revenge on Shane, but instead sided with him and formed a short-lived stable known as "The Conspiracy" with Shane, Chris Benoit, Edge, Kurt Angle and Christian. After Undertaker threw Wight through a table, he disappeared for some time (he was sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling to lose weight). WWF management was so unhappy with his inability to lose weight and sharpen his skills that he was removed from two of their video games: WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role for the PlayStation and WWF No Mercy for the Nintendo 64, where his character was replaced with Steven Richards. In both games, certain aspects of Big Show were still usable through the use of a GameShark: his face could be hacked in No Mercy, while his entire unfinished character (along with Ken Shamrock) was playable in SmackDown! 2.

Wight returned at the 2001 Royal Rumble, but after taking out all of the competitors with chokeslams and eliminating Test and K-Kwik, he was eliminated by The Rock. Angered by his quick elimination, he proceeded to chokeslam The Rock through the announcer’s table at ring side before he left the arena, this however did not eliminate The Rock as he never went over the top rope.

He then began competing for the Hardcore Championship, which he lost to Kane in a triple threat match which also included Raven at WrestleMania X-Seven.

Throughout The Invasion later that year Wight remained loyal to the WWF. He faced Shane McMahon, the onscreen owner of WCW, in a last man standing match at Backlash 2001, and was defeated following interference from Test. He was also part of the victorious Team WWF at Survivor Series 2001, though he was eliminated early in the proceedings.

World Wrestling Entertainment
Wight was the number six pick of Ric Flair (representing the RAW brand) in the March 25, 2002 draft. He turned heel by betraying Steve Austin in the course of a match and rejoining the newest incarnation of the New World Order, but the stable disbanded after Kevin Nash was injured. Wight achieved little success on RAW after this, at one point even losing to the much smaller Jeff Hardy. Wight began a feud with Booker T, but lost the majority of his matches. He then feuded with the Dudley Boyz, but was once again repeatedly defeated. Wight then informed General Manager Eric Bischoff that he would hurt him if he was not elevated to main event status.

In late 2002, Wight was notified by Bischoff that he had been traded to SmackDown! in exchange for Randy Orton, Ivory, Maven, D-Von Dudley and Val Venis. Upon arriving on SmackDown!, Wight immediately challenged WWE Champion Brock Lesnar, who he defeated at the 2002 Survivor Series following interference from Lesnar's manager Paul Heyman, thus becoming a two time WWE Champion. He lost the title to Kurt Angle a month later.

In January 2003, Wight lost a Royal Rumble qualifying match to Lesnar. He then began feuding with The Undertaker, leading to Wight and his partner A-Train losing to The Undertaker at WrestleMania XIX. After that, he began a feud with Eddie Guerrero, who he defeated for the WWE United States Championship. Wight became an associate of Brock Lesnar, but abandoned Lesnar immediately before WrestleMania XX. At WrestleMania XX, Wight lost the United States Championship to John Cena.

On the April 15, 2004 episode of SmackDown!, Wight promised to quit if he failed to defeat Eddie Guerrero that night. He lost to Guerrero, and, believing that Torrie Wilson had laughed at him for losing, upended her car and threatened to throw her off a ledge. Kurt Angle ascended to the ledge to try and talk some reason into Wight, but Wight chokeslammed him from the ledge, concussing Angle and (kayfabe) breaking his leg. He was "fired" as a result.

In mid-2004, Wight was reinstated by new General Manager Theodore R. Long, and at No Mercy 2004, Wight, once more a face, fought Kurt Angle. In the weeks before the match, Wight claimed to have "lost his dignity" when Angle tranquilized him in the middle of the ring using a dart gun and shaved his head (Wight retained his bald head until October 2005).

In 2005, Wight began pursuing the WWE Championship once more, challenging John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) to a barbed wire steel cage match at No Way Out 2005. After Wight chokeslammed JBL through the ring, Layfield managed to crawl to the outside, winning the match and retaining his title.

On April 3, 2005, at WrestleMania 21, Wight faced Sumo Wrestling Grand Champion Akebono in a worked sumo match that was added to the show to attract a strong pay-per-view audience in Japan, where Akebono is considered a sporting legend. In the weeks preceding the match, Wight pushed over a jeep driven to the ring by Luther Reigns to show that he was capable of moving the marginally heavier Akebono. Wight lost to Akebono at WrestleMania.

In May 2005 Wight suffered "injured ribs" on the right-hand side of his torso and was temporarily sidelined after Carlito Caribbean Cool's bodyguard Matt Morgan used the F-5 to drive him through the announcers' table (Carlito was displeased by Wight's refusal to become his bodyguard). On June 16, Wight and Morgan fought in a singles match. Following a distraction by Carlito, Morgan was able to knock Wight out of the ring. He then attempted to drive Wight through the announcers' table once again after Carlito hit Wight with a steel chair. Wight, however, managed this time to reverse the F-5 and shove Morgan into Carlito, then chokeslam Morgan through the table, gaining a measure of revenge. Wight's feud with Morgan continued on June 23 when Muhammad Hassan was drafted from RAW to SmackDown! and immediately booked by Theodore Long to face Wight as a punishment for his arrogance. Before the match, Morgan came to ringside, ostensibly to serve as a guest commentator. When the referee was knocked unconscious by an errant blow, Morgan attempted to hit Wight with a steel chair, but failed. As Wight dispatched Morgan, Hassan struck him in the head with Morgan's chair, enabling him to secure a victory.

RAW

Wight with United States military personnel in Afghanistan in December 2005.On June 27, 2005, Wight was traded back to RAW in the 2005 WWE Draft Lottery, preventing him from participating in a scheduled six-man elimination match for the SmackDown! Championship. He successfully pinned Gene Snitsky in a tag team match which degenerated into a singles match when both men's partners brawled backstage. After squashing his scheduled opponents for several weeks, Wight approached Chris Masters on July 18, volunteering to try and break Masters's Master Lock, after Masters boasted that no-one, no matter how big, could break free from the hold. Masters refused to accept Wight's challenge and retreated up the ramp and away from the ring. In the following weeks, Wight faced Masters in many tag team matches before the angle was dropped without explanation and Wight returned to his rivalry with Snitsky.

On August 15 Wight defeated The Heart Throbs in a handicap match, easily overpowering his smaller opponents throughout the brief match. The following week, he continued his rivalry with Gene Snitsky by foiling Snitsky's harassment of backstage interviewer Maria. On August 29, Snitsky hit Wight with the ring bell immediately after Wight had won a match. As a result, Wight and Snitsky were placed in a match at Unforgiven 2005 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 18 in which Wight defeated Snitsky. On September 26, Wight defeated Snitsky again in a street fight.

On October 17, Wight defeated Edge and was thus entered in an online poll, with the winner of the poll facing John Cena and Kurt Angle in a triple threat match for the WWE Championship at Taboo Tuesday 2005 on November 1. The poll was won by Shawn Michaels, and Wight teamed with Kane (who had also been entered in the poll) to defeat Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch for the World Tag Team Championship.

In the weeks preceding the 2005 Survivor Series, Wight became involved in the rivalry between the RAW and SmackDown! brands. He and Kane invaded the November 11 episode of SmackDown! and, along with Edge, attacked Batista (inadvertently injuring him in the process). On the November 14 episode of RAW, a tribute to Eddie Guerrero (who had died the previous day), Wight and Kane defeated SmackDown! wrestlers and reigning WWE Tag Team Champions MNM in an inter-brand, non-title match. On November 21, Wight and Kane "injured" Batista by delivering a double chokeslam onto the windshield of a car. At Survivor Series, Wight, Kane, Carlito, Chris Masters and team captain Shawn Michaels, represented RAW in a match with Team SmackDown!; JBL, Rey Mysterio, Bobby Lashley, Randy Orton and Batista. SmackDown! won the match, with Randy Orton the sole survivor.

Wight drew with Rey Mysterio in an inter-promotional match held on SmackDown! after Kane interfered and the match was declared a no-contest. Following the match, Wight and Kane attacked Mysterio until The Undertaker chased them from the ring. Wight and Kane returned to SmackDown! on December 2, defeating Mysterio and JBL after JBL abandoned the match, claiming the referee had poked him in the eye. Following the match, Wight and Kane's attempt to assault Mysterio was once again foiled, this time when Batista ran in to see them off. As a result, Wight and Kane were booked to face Batista and Mysterio at Armageddon 2005 on December 18. They won the match, which pitted the Tag Team Champions from each brand against one another.

On the December 12 episode of RAW, Wight took part in a qualifying match for a shot at the WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber match at New Year's Revolution on January 8, 2006. Wight lost to his opponent, Shawn Michaels, by disqualification after Triple H hit Michaels with a chair, intentionally costing Wight the match and the title shot. In retaliation, Wight cost Triple H his qualifying match with Kane later that evening. On the December 26 episode of RAW, during the contract signing for the announced match between Wight and Triple H at New Year's Revolution, Triple H struck Wight in the hand that Wight apparently favors when using the chokeslam with his sledgehammer. The following week, Wight attacked Triple H while wearing a cast on his hand, using the padding provided by the cast to punch a hole in a chair held by Triple H, destroying a monitor from the announcers' table that Triple H intended to throw at him and chasing Triple H away from the ring. At New Year's Revolution, Triple H defeated Wight after striking him in the head with his sledgehammer.

Wight was one of eight participants in the 2006 Road to WrestleMania Tournament, the winner of which would receive a shot at the WWE Championship. In his first round match on February 6, Wight defeated Shelton Benjamin. On the February 13 episode of RAW, Wight faced Triple H in the tournament semi-finals in a match that ended in a double count out. As a result, Wight and Triple H faced Rob Van Dam (the winner of the opposing semi-finals) in a triple threat match to determine the winner of the tournament on the February 20 episode of RAW. The match was won by Triple H after he pinned Van Dam.

In the weeks following the tournament, Wight and Kane feuded with Chris Masters and Carlito, leading to a World Tag Team Championship title match being scheduled for WrestleMania 22. Wight and Kane defeated Carlito and Masters in the opening bout of WrestleMania 22, marking Wight's first victory at WrestleMania after suffering six defeats. On the following evening, Wight and Kane lost the World Tag Team Championship to Spirit Squad members Kenny and Mikey following copious interference from the other members of the Spirit Squad. They faced Spirit Squad members Johnny and Nicky in a rematch one week later, but lost via disqualification after Kane "snapped" and left the ring to attack the other members of the Spirit Squad. The ensuing feud between Kane and Wight culminated in a match at Backlash 2006 on April 30, 2006 that ended in a no contest.

[edit]
Extreme Championship Wrestling
At WWE vs. ECW Head to Head on June 7, 2006, Wight defected to the Extreme Championship Wrestling brand of WWE by removing his RAW shirt to reveal an ECW shirt during a twenty man battle royal pitting members of the RAW and SmackDown! rosters against members of the ECW roster. Wight went on to win the match for ECW by eliminating Randy Orton over the ropes. Wight went on to appear at ECW One Night Stand 2006 on June 11, 2006, attacking Tajiri, Super Crazy and the Full Blooded Italians after their tag team match before becoming a regular performer in the brand's weekly show.

On the July 4, 2006 episode of ECW on Sci Fi, Wight defeated Rob Van Dam to win the ECW World Heavyweight Championship with the assistance of Paul Heyman. The victory saw him become the first ever professional wrestler to hold the WWE Championship, WCW World Heavyweight Championship and ECW World Heavyweight Championship. He has since defeneded the title against a variety of opponents including Ric Flair, Undertaker, Kane and Batista. In the first-ever ECW match in SummerSlam history, Big Show chokeslammed Sabu through a table and pinned him to retain his ECW World Championship. The next night Big Show once again defended his title against Sabu, this winning by DQ.

Personal life
Like André the Giant, Wight has acromegaly or "gigantism", although he underwent successful surgery in the early 1990s on his pituitary gland which halted the progress of this condition. By the age of twelve, Wight was 6 ft 2 in (188 cm) tall, weighed 220 lb (100 kg) and had chest hair. His height peaked in the early 2000s at 7 ft 1 in (216 cm), with his weight reaching a maximum of 541 lb (245 kg). His shoe size is 22 5 E, his ring size is 22.5 and his chest is 64 in (163 cm) in circumference. In 2005, Wight leased a bus and hired a bus driver because of the practical problems his size presents to air travel and car rental.

While in college (Wichita State University), Wight played basketball, and was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. While in WCW, he was arrested and detained for allegedly exposing himself to a hotel clerk in Memphis, Tennessee. He was later released due to a lack of evidence.

Wight is married, and his wife, Bess, is of average height. He also has a daughter, Sierra, from a previous marriage.

While appearing on the Howard Stern Show, Wight told the story of how he had been cleared of all charges after a professional wrestling fan initiated a lawsuit against him for assault. Wight had been in a hotel lobby when the fan approached him and began verbally abusing him before shoving him. Wight defended himself by punching the fan, shattering his jaw.

Wight has numerous tattoos, including a tiger on his right bicep and his wife's name on the back of his neck
EDGE
Adam Joseph Copeland (born on October 30, 1973 in Orangeville, Ontario), is a Canadian professional wrestler better known by his ring name Edge. He is currently wrestling on the RAW brand of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), where he is the reigning WWE Champion. Copeland initially rose to fame as one half of the tag team Edge and Christian, alongside his real life best friend and storyline brother Jason "Christian" Reso.

Early career
Throughout the 1990s Copeland wrestled for many independent promotions in Ontario as well in the Great Lakes region of the United States under the name Sexton Hardcastle. As Sexton Hardcastle he was managed by Johnny Bradford and Judd the Studd and would go on to become a part of the successful tag team Sex and Violence, with Joe Legend, in the Detroit area. During 1997, Sex and Violence were a part of a bigger stable known as Thug Life, made up of Legend, Hardcastle, Christian Cage, Bloody Bill Skullion and Rhino Richards. In his indy career, he also won the SSW Tag title, the ICW Street Fight Tag Title and the ICW/MWCW Midwest Unified Tag Title, all with Cage. The duo was known as Hard Impact, before changing their name to the Suicide Blondes.

[edit]
World Wrestling Federation
In 1998 Copeland was signed by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), and made his WWF television debut later that year. He started his WWF career as Edge, a strange loner character who entered the arena through the crowd for his matches. In his first pay-per-view match with the company, SummerSlam '98, he served as Sable's mystery tag team partner against Jacqueline and Marc Mero, and actually bodyslammed Sable on to Mero in a pinning position to pick up the win.

[edit]
1999-2000
Edge was then placed into a feud against the vampire wrestler Gangrel. During the feud Gangrel introduced Christian, Edge's kayfabe brother as his ally. Eventually, Gangrel and Christian convinced Edge to join them and the three of them formed a faction known as The Brood. The Brood as a whole was later abducted by and converted into The Undertaker's Ministry of Darkness.

Edge (left) and Christian as the WWF Tag Team Champions. In May of 1999 the Brood broke away from The Ministry after Christian was attacked by Ken Shamrock and forced by him to reveal the location of the captive Stephanie McMahon. The Undertaker chose to have Christian punished for his trespass, but Edge and Gangrel stood by him and turned against Undertaker. This was historic in the effect that no one else actually defected from the Ministry before or after that: it dissolved with all the other members intact.

Following a short feud with the Ministry, they began a feud with The Hardy Boyz (Matt and Jeff Hardy). Soon, however, Gangrel turned on Edge and Christian and formed The New Brood with their enemies, The Hardyz.

Even after the New Brood split Edge & Christian continued to feud with The Hardy Boyz. The two teams competed in the a tag team ladder match at the 1999 No Mercy pay-per-view for the "managerial services" of Terri Runnels and $100,000, however Edge & Christian came up short.

At WrestleMania 2000, Edge and Christian defeated the Hardyz and the Dudley Boyz to win their first WWF World Tag Team Title in a Triangle Ladder Match which birthed the Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match.

Following this victory, Edge and Christian found success as a heel duo, shifting their gimmick from borderline goths to a comedic pair of "cool dudes", winning the WWF Tag Team Titles seven more times. During this time their trademark became the "five second pose" where they would perform a pose in the ring for five seconds "for the benefit of those with flash photography" to mock, insult, or otherwise amuse the fans. They also competed as a team in the first three Tables, Ladders, and Chairs matches, winning the first two over The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz, at SummerSlam 2000 and then again at WrestleMania X-Seven.

[edit]
2001-2002
Copeland would go on to solidify himself as a burgeoning singles star by winning the 2001 King of the Ring tournament. Christian turned on Edge shortly afterward, and the two feuded over Edge's Intercontinental Championship, which Christian won and lost back to Edge. Edge lost the Intercontinental Title to Test and shortly afterward won the WCW United States Championship from Kurt Angle. Edge defeated Test at Survivor Series 2001 to unify the Intercontinental Championship with the WCW United States Championship he previously lost.

Throughout the winter months of 2001 Copeland feuded with William Regal for the Intercontinental Title after Regal beat him for it. Edge came up short in the feud. When WrestleMania X8 came around Edge found himself in a match with Booker T that was the result of Edge beating out Booker for a fictitious Japanese shampoo endorsement.

After his feud with Booker T was quietly pushed aside Copeland was drafted to the SmackDown! brand in the first WWE Draft. Upon arriving there he began a feud against Kurt Angle which culminated with Edge shaving Kurt's head following a hair vs. hair match. When Rey Mysterio made his SmackDown! debut, the two formed a pair and captured the WWE Tag Team Championship. The duo were often referred to as "the future of SmackDown!".

[edit]
2003-2004
In February 2003, Copeland suffered a neck injury that required surgery which kept him sidelined for close to a year. During his recovery he wrote a column for WWE.com. He was scheduled to return to the ring in February 2004, but suffered a broken hand just before his expected return which forced him to stay out of the ring for an additional month. He was placed on the RAW brand in the draft lottery after WrestleMania XX, and returned to in-ring action shortly after that event. Upon returning Edge appeared to be a brand-new man, visibly having more muscle-mass and upping his weight from 240 to 250 pounds. He also sported a new tattoo on his left shoulder. On the April 19, 2004 edition of RAW he and Chris Benoit won the World Tag Team Championship. He continued to back Benoit and be there whenever Benoit needed him, even after they lost the titles. The partnership was disbanded when Edge won the Intercontinental Championship.

In July, at Vengeance 2004, Edge defeated Randy Orton to win the Intercontinental Championship. He then turned heel. Following a (legit) groin injury in a non-televised match RAW General Manager Eric Bischoff stripped Edge of the Intercontinental Championship.

When Edge returned, his character was portrayed as a crazed heel with severe anger management problems centered around his obsession for the World Heavyweight Championship. He, Benoit and Shawn Michaels received a chance to be voted in by fans for a title shot at Triple H's World Heavyweight Championship for Taboo Tuesday 2004. However, Shawn Michaels won the vote, which gave the two remaining wrestlers, Edge and Benoit, a Tag Title shot. During the match Edge abandoned his partner (although Benoit managed to win the titles on his own) and instead interfered in the main event, costing Michaels the championship.

Edge would eventually abandon his tag team partner Benoit yet again, allowing them to lose the titles. Edge then joined Triple H's team for Survivor Series 2004 while Benoit joined Randy Orton's.

Later on in the year, both Edge and Benoit competed in a number one contenders battle royal, eliminating each other simultaneously at the conclusion of the match, resulting in a draw. Due to this, current World Heavyweight Champion Triple H was forced to defend the title in a triple threat match. During the course of the match, Benoit locked on the Crippler Crossface, while in it Edge shifted his weight putting Benoit's shoulders on the mat for a pin. The match ended in a Dusty finish as Benoit made Edge submit at the same time the referee counted a pinfall for Edge. As a result of this, the World Heavyweight Title was vacated the next week on RAW.

[edit]
2005-2006
Edge got another shot at the World Heavyweight Championship at New Year's Revolution 2005 in the Elimination Chamber. Edge and a returning Shawn Michaels, who was acting as guest referee, renewed their rivalry when Michaels hit Edge with 'Sweet Chin Music'. Edge went on to defeat Michaels at the Royal Rumble later in the month.

At WrestleMania 21, Edge won the first ever "Money in the Bank ladder match", gaining himself a contract that (kayfabe) guaranteed him a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship within one year.

It was around this time that Edge came under heavy criticism by the Internet wrestling community due to his (legit) "betrayal" of fellow wrestler and real life friend, Matt Hardy, by having an affair with Matt's girlfriend of six years Amy "Lita" Dumas. Lita had been out of action for several months with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and shortly after she recovered, Matt Hardy suffered the same injury and was put out of action. It was during this time that Edge, despite being married, began an affair with Lita.

Nevertheless, or perhaps because of this, Edge was paired with Lita in a angle where she turned on her on-air husband Kane. On the July 11 edition of RAW, Edge's main event match with Kane was interrupted when Matt Hardy made a surprising appearance. The situation was suspected to be a worked shoot, with Hardy referring to Edge by his real name, "Adam", and issuing a threat to Lita (whom he addressed as "Amy") as well. When Matt Hardy was officially brought back to RAW he and Edge faced continued their feud leading to a match at SummerSlam, where Edge defeated Hardy by "knockout". Edge defeated Hardy in a Loser Leaves RAW match at WWE Homecoming, seemingly ending their feud once and for all.

Shortly after the Homecoming victory, Edge suffered a (legit) torn pectoral muscle that kept him shelved for several weeks. During his time off, he starred in his own talk show segment on RAW entitled The Cutting Edge and dubbed himself the "Rated-R Superstar". Edge used his talk show to start a feud with Ric Flair following Flair's well-publicized arrest in connection with a road rage incident. Edge began using "The Cutting Edge" as a soapbox to run down Flair until, after weeks of public mockery, Flair eventually showed up and attacked Edge.

Edge and Lita, after Edge won the WWE Championship from John Cena at New Year's Revolution 2006.Edge and Flair formally met at the 2006 New Year's Revolution pay-per-view in a match in which Edge was disqualified. Later that night, however, following the main event Elimination Chamber match Vince McMahon appeared on the stage, declaring that Cena would defend the WWE Championship he'd just retained "one more time". Cena was forced into a match against Edge who decided to cash in his Money in the Bank contract. Edge defeated Cena in short order to become WWE Champion, and a Triple Crown Champion.

In an interview conducted after New Year's Revolution on WWE.com, Edge announced that he and Lita would have "hot, torrid sex" in the middle of the ring on RAW the next night to celebrate his victory. On RAW, Edge and Lita seemingly held up to that promise by engaging in foreplay until they were interrupted by Ric Flair calling Edge a disgrace. However, Flair ended up on the receiving end of a one-man con-chair-to on the announcers' table until John Cena came out to rescue Flair. The sex segment earned RAW a 5.2 rating and Edge would later call himself the "most-watched WWE Champion in the last 5 years" due to the high ratings.

Three weeks (to the day) later, at the Royal Rumble, Edge lost the WWE Championship back to Cena. Edge lost a return match on the special Thursday edition of RAW held on February 16, 2006. Edge blamed special guest referee Mick Foley for his loss, claiming biased officiating, and attacked him. They feuded until April's WrestleMania 22 where Edge defeated Foley in a Hardcore Match, bringing Edge's WrestleMania record to 5-0, the second best undefeated streak at WrestleMania (second only to the Undertaker's 14-0).

After Backlash, Edge was once again involved with Mick Foley, this time as a partner against Tommy Dreamer and Terry Funk leading up to One Night Stand. At the pay-per-view Edge Foley and Lita defeated Dreamer, Funk and Beulah McGillicutty in an "Extreme Rules" tag team match.

During the ECW feud, Edge also won the #1 contendership for the WWE Title against The Big Show on Raw. While #1 contender Edge interfered in a WWE Title match between champion John Cena and challenger Rob Van Dam, helping Van Dam win the title. However Edge was unable to win the title when he got his shot at it at Vengeance.

Two weeks later, on the July 3 edition of RAW Edge pinned Rob Van Dam in a Triple Threat Match, also involving John Cena, to become WWE Champion for the second time. The match marked the first time the WWE Championship changed hands on RAW since October 8, 2001.

Winning the title re-ignited his feud with John Cena from earlier in the year with Edge taking shortcuts (losing by disqualification) in order to retain his title. As a result of these tactics a match was made for SummerSlam where if Edge was disqualified he would not only lose the match, but his title. In the SummerSlam match Edge managed to retain his title by pinning Cena after hitting him in the back of the head with brass knuckles while Lita distracted the referee.

On the next night's RAW Lita, at Edge's command, threw John Cena's customized "spinner" belt into the Long Island Sound, which he said signaled the elimination of Cena from his life. Following that a column of smoke descended from the rafters concealing Edge's brand new "Rated R" title belt. During his match that night with a returning Jeff Hardy, who had confronted Edge earlier in the night, Cena attacked 'the Rated R Superstar'. The two battled to the outside of the arena, resulting in Cena throwing Edge into the Long Island Sound, telling him he's not going anywhere.

During 2001-2003 it was "Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)" by Rob Zombie and before that he used two original WWF made songs entitled "You Think You Know Me" and "On the Edge". Since "You Think You Know Me", all of his theme music has been preceded by the eponymous phrase from that song.

Personal life
As a teenager, he appeared at WrestleMania VI as part of the crowd cheering for WWF Champion Hulk Hogan in the "Ultimate Challenge" Main Event against Intercontinental Champion Ultimate Warrior. It was this match which made him realize he wanted to be a wrestler and follow in the footsteps of Hogan and Warrior.

During his high school years Copeland was voted "Most Likely to win the WWF World Heavyweight Championship."

Copeland's autobiography, entitled "Adam Copeland On Edge", was published on November 4, 2004. He was only the second WWE wrestler (the first being Mick Foley) to actually write a whole book himself, instead of using a ghost writer like many other wrestlers.

Copeland was first married to wrestler Sean "Val Venis" Morley's sister Alanah, but was divorced from her in 2004. He then met Lisa Ortiz (not to be confused with the voice actress of the same name) and married her in October 2004. He began having an affair with fellow wrestler Amy "Lita" Dumas, in December 2004. Copeland filed for divorce from Ortiz which was completed in Novemeber 2005.

Copeland had a tattoo on his upper biceps of a shark flexing its arm that resembled the protagonists of the cartoon "Street Sharks". He later covered that tattoo with a tattoo of a sun.

Is apparently still with Amy "Lita" Dumas in real life.
