Backing up is more than copying.

Its when you make a copy and then put it somewhere safe, like in a backup folder, or in a different drive, or if you burn it to disk and keep it locked away.

Copying is just replicating and it can be for reasons other than backing up. For example if you copy a template, you can rename it and add specific details. Or if you want lots of people to see the same document, you make lots of copies instead of everyone taking turns.

Back ups are different because you will need the program that created it to read the file. If you want to back up your files so that you can view them on any pc, the way you do now, burn them to disc or get an external drive and copy them to it.
