I suggest taking it for the first time at the END of your junior year and then a second time at the beginning of your senior year.

You can take it in either year. I took it junior year, and I got 2 perfect scores in math and reading, but my writing score was only 720, for a total of 2320. I only read this SAT guide, and that is how I got such high scores:

The S.A.Ts are taken your senior year of high school. The P.S.A.Ts can be taken during your junior year.
