Check Engine usually means an emissions device problem. I recommend taking the car to a place like autozone and get them to read the code. (They will do it for free). They will also help clear the code to eliminate the light. Sometimes it's a fluke that the light comes on. Sometimes it's an indication that something is begining to go wrong. If after they reset the light, it comes on again, then you have an idea of what is wrong when you take it to the mechanic. The error information will at least point you in the direction of the problem even if it doesn't tell you specifically what the problem it will tell you what sensor tripped the check engine light.

Generally the Check Engine light means that the computer is storing an error code. The most common error code is an Out of Range error. This means that some sensor which is supposed to be reporting a number between 1-5 is saying 6 for some reason. You need to take it somewhere that can read the stored code to find out exactly what's going on.

It can be caused by hundreds of things, even a loose gas cap.
