I'm glad someone asked that question, I've always wondered the same thing. It's so annoying. Especially when someone says 'conversate' instead of 'converse'. Look it up if someone doesn't believe me. Or how about - - 'irregardless' !!!! It's just 'regardless' !!!! I don't consider any of this ebonics, it's just stupidity

Actually, I think that they can.
A while back, I asked one of my black coworkers this question. And she could pronounce ask. And I know many black people who say "ask" instead of "axe". I guess it's almost like an accent... Why do people in the south have a different accent than the people of the north?
Why do Americans, South Africans, Australians, and people from England all have different accents?
It's because it's what they've grown up listening to and speaking. Raise a black kid in an all white family, and I'm sure that they will talk like a white person.
Raise an English kid in America, and they will have an American accent.
Do you understand what I'm getting at? It's all about the people you are surrounded by, and what you are accustomed to. It's not an inability to do it.

You probably should restate your question. Why? Because your question implies that all Black People can't pronounce the word ask, and we know that isn't true. Perhaps your experience is due to your environment. Experience some diversity in your social arena and perhaps you will realize how stupid your question really is.

Whoever we are; wherever we live; all people tend to speak the same as those in similar environments do in word formation, dialect, accent, etc. regardless of race.
By the way, I can and do (as my relatives and friends also do) say "ask/asks". People can "ask" me questions, but I don't ever want to be "axed" and no one better "@$$" me anything, either.
Next time you ask questions, please use the adjective "some" so as not to lump a group of people into one. Each race has diversities within it. Thank you. (Ex. "Why can't [some]...?)
Happy Sabbath.

I honestly think it is because they don't want to.
Yes, there are societal norms and pronounciation is something that is pretty much either right or wrong...
But, they are not wrong for not wanting to pronouncing it the way everyone else does - just being individuals.

They can, but ebonics is part of their culture. Why do white kids say "Dude" ? Why are white people racial, but talk ebonic? I hear a lot of them say "Gangsta, Hoe, waz up?" They're all just words, and yes, I'm white.

I've met many black people who easily pronounce the word ASK. Don't generalize people, that just makes you look extremely ignorant.
