This a very good Question,
YOU MIGHT find lot of BULL S H IT by other people in response to this question but if you want my answer.

Lets take a ride through art and LETS Question its existence…….

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
AS EXPLAINED BY - FREDRICK NIETZSCHE

Our society has 3 predominant acts

1. Philosophy
2. Science
3. Art
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now what is art?
To understand that we have to understand what is philosophy and science?

Philosophy is a way to seek need of society. What is requirement of society? As well the problem which we will face while executing our self to fulfill that need.

Science seeks the way to fulfill that need and solving the problem we might face.

art : is execution of science to that need or requirement. CREATING THE PRODUCT .

Art is An Idealist way of executing some act.

Now WHAT DOES Art involve???

Perception, realization, comprehension, realization and execution, if any of these act is not included it’s not art. Its just waste.

A piece of art has to have a meaning and through its process it must communicate.
ART : FOR WHAT EVER SPACE AND TIME ,--- PLACE AND OCCASION MEANS MORE .
Just like human art should be able to breath in and out to be called ART.

The purpose of art can be explained in 2 parts:
1) from the creator's viewpoint (primary) and
2) from the observer's (secondary)

1) For the creator, the purpose of art is to satisfy the artist's inner need to create. This compulsion is subconscious, and not chosen by the artist, but instead experienced, usually deeply. As art must be created BEFORE it's observed, this is the more profound of our 2 purposes of art.

2) From the observer's point of view, the purpose of art is to enrich the moment. Again, this is a subconscious action. You don't consciously choose what you like. You just like it.

It's important to note that for pure art, these 2 purposes must never be mixed. The artist must answer only his inner voice. The reaction he creates has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with his creative process. I mean it's nice and all if people like it, but a true artist cannot allow this need for success/acclaim affect his course. This is hard when you're as insecure as I am.

I'll try and give a practical answer for this.

Art helps the masses articulate feelings, ideas, and concepts that otherwise could not be expressed. For example, after 9/11, people felt a lot of things, but didn't know how to express them. An artist could put his finger on the pulse of these feelings, and manifest them in the form of music, poetry, theater, and even film (United 93, World Trade Center).

Art mirrors life. That is, it shows us what we are really doing when we are too busy engrossed in life. We can learn from our follies and think about what we can do to make life better.

Art excites. A great song might make you move, a great film might make you cry, a great painting might make you look at the world differently.

Art brings balance to our civilization. Instead of inventing new technology and consuming every resource, art allows us to reflect on our world, laugh at our world, and ask questions such as, "What it the purpose of ART?"

Um... the purpose of art is whatever purpose the artist has in mind. It could be to express an idea, to entertain, to promote an opinion... There are lots of purposes for art.

Like the other day, I saw a piece of art that's purpose was to promote the latest offerings of Jack in the Box.. and to entertain.

The purpose of are is to keep us sane. Saying art is useless to an artist is like saying music is useless to a musician. It is what we do to express our feelings that we aren't brave enough to put into words. The feelings we have deep inside that most likely even the people closest don't know about. It is our way to show the world who we are. Art was never useless and never will be. Even if you can't do art you should respect that others work hard on their art.

Our world would be very blah and boring without art. Everything we have in society has some connection with art. EVERYTHING made by man for man has to do with art. Look at Andy Warhol's painting of the Tomato Soup Can. His purpose for this artwork was to show that anything can be considered to be art even a tomato soup can.
The clothes we wear, the styles you are into was created by fashion designers and they are all artists. Art affects our world in more ways than anyone can ever image.
If anything, take a beginning art class and experience it for yourself.

It is what separates us from the animals. It is uniquely human, and the inner desires to create the art are, as well.

In my opinion, the best art is created when people have the passion to create it, not just for income or status. Some of the best artists in history never made a dime (or whatever their equivalent currency was), but continued to create almost to an obsessive level.

It provides for the artist what are called "peak" moments, where you are so immersed in the activity, you lose track of time, even place, somewhat like hypnosis.

What do you mean, what is the purpose of art? That is like asking what is the purpose of music (which of course, is art). The purpose is self-explanatory.
