I love our 2 Labs, Buddy and Daisy, but their puppyhood is a time that I will never forget...nor will I ever buy another puppy. Daisy came first. My husband was duck hunting and just had to have a retriever. He should have bought an already trained adult. Before she was old enough to go to retriever school, she ate a full-size comforter, shoes, books, etc. We finally sent her to Man's Best Friend for 2 weeks of puppy training, $1200. The only thing that did was to give us a 2 week vacation from her. When she was 9 months old, she went away to retriever school($2000.). She is an excellent retriever. The trainer extended her training for an additonal 4 weeks at no cost because she was a little resistent to always doing things his way. While she was gone, we missed her so much that we agreed to take in another Lab that a family was getting rid of. This second Lab, a 7 month old male, was the sweetest dog we had ever met, but he had issues with being left alone. We also learned quickly that he could open the huge crate we bought for him and he could open doors with his mouth. This dog should have been named Houdini. The list of stuff he destroyed due to anxiety when he was left alone is unbelievable. Fortunately, when Daisy came home, the dogs liked each other just fine. I cannot tell you how much damage they have done together, but now they have the gameroom to themselves. They ate 3 sofas before I figured out that I was wasting my money buying furniture for that room. The only chair in the gameroom is my husband's leather recliner where he sits to watch his mega-size TV. Now, that they don't come into the rest of the house, we don't have such a problem with dog hair. I had no idea that Labs shed so much!! Now if I could just get Buddy to quit killing possums and dragging them into the gameroom through the doggie door. Our son and his wife have a German Shepard. It is a very well trained dog that always obeys and never jumps on people, however, he also had absolutely no personality.....a rather boring dog.

If you want a good German Shepard, you must see both the dam and the sire. If they are both sane, easy, loving dogs, ok. Otherwise steer clear of them. Labs are known to be gentle happy go lucky animals.

Each of those breeds have their own personality. Which would suit you better. Look them up on the internet. Unless you have a big yard these breeds take up a lot of room in a small house.

my bf just got a 3 month old german shephard puppy while on vacation together a few weeks ago. he's the sweetest thing! just hope he stays that way when he's full grown! my aunt has had german shephards all her life and they're really nice. as long as you take any big dog to obidence classes, train them and get them socialized alot they will turn out fine. and no hitting or chaining your dog in the backyard, this will make them turn aggressive!
a tip for a puppy who bites you alot while they're teething is to grap their muzzle. they will yelp and whine alot but your not supposed to let go till they stop crying, it takes a few months for them to learn but it works =) worked for me and its workign for my bfs puppy too!

Both are excellent with kids and families a shepherd is usually easier to train but both are smart a shepherd is going to be a little clingier they were bred to stay with their herd that's you. Good luck either way

both are great dogs.. tho i ,might think the lab is more hyper.. and because so often some breeds are over bred, you will want 2 check back ground 4 hip problems..
