that's up to you to decide, there aren't very many of them left
anymore so you might want to turn it loose so that maybe it can breed also if you are going to turn it loose do so before it starts getting colder as he needs to find a place to hibernate, try to take it somewhere safe, no traffic, water nearby, etc
if you decide to keep it, feed it tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe,
squash, chopped greens (not lettuce) canned dog food (chicken based)
you will need to build a pen for it at least 6 x 6 with pond for water
lots of hiding places and substrate to bury in such as leaves, hay
loose soil

If it is in the pool it is more likely a mud or musk turtle- they have a shell very much like the high-domed box turtle.

I do not suggest keeping a wild animal as a pet- it is just hard for the animal to adjust well- they usually don't eat well or thrive in captivity.

Should you decide to keep it, this site can help:

Please do not keep it. Wild turtles need to stay in the wild. It is use to freedom and getting it's own food. Box Turtles like moist land and he must have fallen in and couldn't get out. Just find a place pretty near by and let him go. Hopefully it is the place he came from.

i really dont recommend you keeping it because my brothers found a turtle in a pond near our house and even though we gave it a large enclosure and everything perfect in his diet he didnt survive a week. he only lasted 3 days even though he was eating and drinking and had the perfect habitat. my neighbor, a vet who specializes in reptiles, told us the cause of his death was just stress and that wild animals belong in the wild. he was right.

but if you are going to keep the turtle after hearing that, i will tell you that he needs a large enclosure (like a 10' by 10' dog pen) and a shallow pool of body of water that he can easily get in and out of. feed him lettuce mainly and other vegatables. also add calcium powder (available at pet stores) to his lettuce. name him kirby!
