This site (from yahoo search) give you a quick reference and scientific reasoning or idea of the 4 forces you ask about.
A force is only caused by change(theorically at this time).
to get a force something must cause a movement. either though gravitation(1st force) Gravation is an attraction between any two bodies, example this keeps you on the surface of the planet.
Electromagneticforce(force 2) has properties which causes a force or change in an object or item, or other property. I think this can also change or make adjsutments.movement in currents, moisture, gases ect. this electromagnetic force causes attraction or explosion between any two bodies or item.

Magnetic forces area an attraction between two magnets. these are properties as like poles repel and unlike poles attract. strength can be determined by outside influences such as electricity generated. size of the magnets and their make up.

strong force; strong forces which hold protons that are positively charged on top of each other in the nucleus of an atom! They act only at very short distances!
They hold protons that are positively charged on top of each other in the nucleus of an atom! They act only at very short distances!

Weak forces; these forces are used in explaining radio activity. (the process by which a nucleus ejects some "particles" from within itself).
Basically gravity holds the bodies of the universe together or you might think of gravity as maintaining order/balance in the universe.
Magnetric force maintains properties causes movement.
strong force aand week forces are internal properties of bodies or their results(opinion only)

They just are how the universe is. You can argue the anthropic principle (essentially that of the many universes their could be, you need one set up like ours to produce things that can observe it, like us). You can show that tweaking things much does make for a life inhospitable universe, but the choice to use the anthropic principle to addres the problem straddles science and philosphy.

Now, if you are asking the easier question as to why the forces split from one another, the process is called symmetry breaking, and is something that happens as the energy density of the universe drops.

Symmetry breaking of the strong from the electro-weak force in the early universe is believed to have driven inflation (the big bang). Gravity would have broken from electro-strong at an earlier epoch that we cannot currently address due to a poor understanding of quantum gravity (superstring theories are attempting to address this; some would argue that our understanding is poor.)

You can read about the strong force symmetry break here:
