As a regular visitor to Thailand, I would advise booking somewhere for at least your first couple of nights, although as a visitor, this is NOT a requirement for entry. However, you must have at least 6 months on your passport to travel there for the first time. If you are starting in Bangkok, a good area for basic cheap accomodation is the area around Khaosan Road. There is a large number of B&Bs and hostels used mainly by backpackers. One of my favourites is the Four Sons Inn ( http://www.foursonsinn.com ) which is room only (no breakfast) or try the Sawasdee Khaosan Inn ( http://www.sawadee.com/hotel/bangkok/sawasdeeks/ ) As for the language, many Thais speak enough english for you to be understood, especially in the tourist centres such as bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi, Chang Mai etc. Contraray to a previous answer, the food from street vendors is perfectly safe, I have lived on the stuff for days on end in the past. I would however advise against drinking too much tap water, the bottled stuff is cheap enough. I plan to be out there again in October/November as I now have a g/f there.

If you want a good hotel then book before you go. If you're not bothered where you stay leave it til you get there. The Asia Gold hotel in Bangkok is great. Staff are helpful and friendly, rooms are nice, clean and comfortable. Avoid the Asia Gold Airport hotel though(the 1 in the electronics centre) it's not the cleanest and no facilities. Avoid the tourist markets, they're more expensive. Go where the locals go. Street vendors are OK for a snack usually, just watch them preparing it and again, choose the one that the locals choose. Agree a price before you set off when getting taxis etc... Bring a thai phrase book, most of the Thai people you come across will probably have a little english from meeting tourists but they always like it when you make an effort.
Have fun! It's a great place. I'm going back next June to Bangkok and Hua Hin. I love it.

You should book before you go to Thailand. December is high travel season.
Do you speak Thai? Most people in Thailand don't speak English so it's difficult to communicate with them without knowing the language.
Be careful of the food you eat. Try not to eat from the street vendors. Oh, buy misquito repellent from drug store or 7-11 as soon as you get there.
Have fun!

I was there the year before. DEC is a high season I would advice you to book in advance as you may not get the hotel of your choice. However there will be no shortages of hotels at BKK as there are over 100 5 star hotels. Further with the present security scenario I think hotel rooms should be freely available. One bit of advice beaware of the TukTuks at BKK as they wait to rob you.

i am going to make it short:
go to koh samui and koh panyang and don't waste your time in the other islands. don't miss the full moon party.
as for the booking. you can always find a hotel room or a bangalo even if you don't book in advance. pre-booking is always recommended if you don't have a tight budget coz cheap hotels don't have web sites.

I don't know about Thailand, but the USA and UK won't let you in the country unless you already have a place to stay.
